Champions League QF 2nd Leg Review Part 2

Almost!

Real Madrid 1 vs. 3 Juventus (4-3)

Juventus almost followed Roma into the semi’s in what was a remarkable comeback only to be denied by a penalty in the last minute of extra time.

Juventus had a few players missing due to suspension, Dybala was one of those players and Mandžukić was brought in to replace him. Juventus followed the same path as Roma had against Barcelona and managed to score against Madrid in the 2nd minute. A Khedira cross was headed in by Mandžukić at the far post. Madrid started to dominate the game from that point onwards and missed some really good chances to balance the scoreline. The stats would tell a story of Real domination but they were not great and with Ramos suspended for the game Juventus were getting several chances to add to their goal. Mandžukić scored the 2nd for Juventus in the 37th minute in similar fashion to the first, heading the ball past Navas. Juventus needed to score one more goal in 45 minutes to be back in the tie.

The second half started in a similar way as both teams were playing end to end football. In the 60th minute Navas failed to safely catch a shot and the fumble led to Matuidi scoring to bring Juventus back into the tie. There was plenty of threat from Real but they never seemed like scoring, Juventus deserved to take this fixture into extra time. As is the case in these situations defenders need to keep cool heads and the 92nd minute brought late drama as a headed pass by Ronaldo left Vazquez through on goal but he was brought down from behind by Benatia. There was contact, whether it was sufficient enough to warrant a penalty will be point of discussion but Oliver called for the spot kick. Buffon uncharacteristically lost his cool and remonstrated to Oliver about his decision, Oliver sent off Buffon for his actions in what I feel was an unwarranted red card. Ronaldo stepped up and smashed the ball into the top right sending Madrid to the semis, and leaving Juventus fans heart broken.

Juventus over the past few seasons have been unlucky to not have won the Champions League at least once, but this loss will affect them the most. Buffon should not have been sent off in what could potentially be his last Champions League game. A yellow would have been an appropriate punishment with a penalty already being given. Post Match Buffon stated that Oliver had a bin for a heart and I agree. Madrid head to the semi’s as favourites and an interesting draw should take place on Friday while Juventus still have a Scudetto to secure but they will have to wait for another season for potential Champions League success.

Bayern Munich 0 vs. 0 Sevilla (2-1)

No real talking points in this game as Sevilla failed to replicate their performance at Old Trafford in Munich. Bayern on the other hand seem to be flying under the radar in this seasons Champions League as all eyes have been on the likes of Liverpool, Madrid, and Barcelona.

The four teams to qualify are

  • Liverpool
  • As Roma
  • Bayern Munich
  • Real Madrid

In my opinion Madrid are favourites only due to their recent performances in past seasons. Liverpool and As Roma will be ones to watch out and only an Friday will tell us what will happen.
