Champions League SF 2nd Leg Part 2 Preview

Can Roma do it again?

AS Roma vs. Liverpool (2-5)

The first leg between these two teams last week captured Liverpool’s style of play in entirety, great going forward but a mediocre defence. Were it not for the final few minutes Liverpool would be going into this game with a 5-0 lead and basically both feet in the final. Although this was not the case and Roma managed 2 away goals and they now have the same task they had against Barcelona, to score 3 goals without reply.

At the weekend both teams had contrasting results in their leagues. Roma fielded a strong lineup and won their game against Chievo 4-1 thanks to goals by Schik, Dzeko, and El Shaarawy. Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at home against Stoke with most first team players starting.

The fact that Roma have defeated both Chelsea, and Barcelona at home this season by 3 goals to nil and have not conceded any goals at home in the Champions League shows that Roma will not be doubting themselves. It should also be noted that Chelsea have not had the best of seasons and have been far less clinical in front of goal, while Barcelona having dominated La Liga had been lacklustre in the Champions League. Liverpool are unlike both these teams, they have been ruthless in front of goal with Mané, Salah, and Firmino tearing apart defenses, and even though they have had a relatively easy run in the Champions League they have demolished all their opponents.

Rome will a melting pot of hostility and passion on Wednesday as two passionate teams go head to head for a place in the final. Liverpool will not stay back and defend, they will push for the away goals, while Roma will be attacking with the same intensity we saw against Barcelona. Roma might win the game but keeping out Liverpool’s front three is task unlike any other and so Liverpool should have enough to reach the final. This is football and you never really know, Liverpool fans will hope no one slips up this time.
