Midweek Football Review

Farewell West Brom and Swansea.

Premier League

Swansea 0 vs. 1 Southampton

In what was a close game at the Liberty Stadium, a Manolo Gabbiadini goal in the 72nd minute gave Southampton the three points and in all likelihood a place in next seasons Premier League. Swansea started the better of the two teams but failed to create clear cut chances throughout the game. The three points mean that Southampton are now 17th with 36 points while Swansea are 18th with 33 points. The result also meant that West Brom are officially relegated although they have given a good account of themselves in these final weeks. Swansea are probably going to get relegated as they would need to win and hope that Southampton lost to Man City by a huge margin of goals. Looks like Mark Hughes will hold his record of never having been relegated.

Leicester 3 vs. 1 Arsenal

Arsenal continue to have not won a point away from home in 2018. Leicester took the lead via Iheanacho early in the first half. Mavropanos was sent off for Arsenal a minute later after having brought down Iheanacho who was through on goal. Arsenal started the second half in better fashion as they managed to equalise via Aubameyang. Mkhitaryan conceded a penalty and Vardy converted it to give Leicester the lead while Mahrez added a third in the 90th minute. Leicester managed to end a poor run of form and move to within two points off Everton who are 8th. Arsenal have another shot to end their poor away form as they travel to Huddersfield on the final day of the season.

Man City 3 vs. 1 Brighton

In what was Yaya Toure’s last home game for Man City, the league champions managed to set three records through a commanding win against Brighton. Danilo scored the opening goal in the 16th minute but Ulloa equalised for Brighton soon after. The goal failed to give Brighton any impetus and Man City continued to dominate and added to their tally via Bernardo Silva and Fernandinho. The man of the match was Sané as he assisted all three of the goals. City achieved their 31st win (beating last season’s record set by Chelsea), City now have 97 points (beating Chelsea’s record set in 04/05), and City have now scored a 105 goals this season (beating Chelsea’s record of 103 set in 09/10).

Tottenham 1 vs. 0 Newcastle

Kane scored in the 50th minute to give Tottenham the three points and a place in the Champions League for next season. Newcastle managed to hit the post via Shelvey and had a couple of good chances but failed to convert them. The win takes Tottenham to 3rd with 74 points while Newcastle remain 10th.

West Ham 0 vs. 0 Man United

A goalless draw in London was enough to earn Man United a second place finish for this season. United had several chances in the first half but Adrian made some stunning saves. West Ham are 15th with 39 points, two points adrift of Newcastle in 10th.

Coupe De France Final

Les Herbiers 0 vs. 2 PSG

Goals by Celso and Cavani handed PSG the Coupe De France in what was an expected result. Les Herbiers put in a good account of themselves and really have been the standout performers of the tournament.
