World Cup Opening Day Review

Group A
Russia 5 vs. 0 Saudi Arabia
Russia opened the World Cup with an explosive victory against a poor Saudi Arabia side. After a decent start by both sides Golovin left open crossed the ball into the box for Gazinsky to score in the 12th minute. Russia’s star player Dzagoev went off in the 24th minute after what looked like a hamstring injury, he was replaced by Cheryshev. Cheryshev seized upon his chance by doubling the lead in the 43rd minute and sending Russia into half time with a two goal cushion. Saudi managed to hold on until the 71st minute but Golovin was left open yet again and delivered a cross for Dzyuba who scored the third for Russia. Saudi seemed to fall flat after the third goal and in the 91st minute Cheryshev scored his second with a beautiful effort from the outside of his left foot. Golovin put the icing on the cake with a brilliantly taken free kick in the 94th minute to send Russian fans into raptures.
