France 4 vs. 3 Argentina

France won an amazing round of 16 opening game against Argentina. France opened the scoring after Griezmann scored a penalty in the 13th minute, Mbappé had been brought down in the box. Argentina had much of the possession throughout the first half but failed to create any major chances, but in the 41st minute Di Maria scored with a brilliant shot from outside of the box to send both teams in level at half time. Mercado shocked fans in the stadium after a shot by Messi deflected of him to give Argentina the lead in the 48th minute. France rallied and a Pavard scored a beautiful shot in the 57th minute to level the game once again. Two brilliant quick fire goals from Mbappé in the 64th and 68th minute gave France a two goal cushion and sent fans into delirium. Aguero scored in the 93rd minute but it was too little too late. France reached the Quarter Finals after showing great team unity and fighting spirit and while Argentina gave them a run for their money Messi could not encourage his team to a win. Stars are born in World Cup’s and while it seemed like the star of Messi was heading for his World Cup exit the star Mbappé has established itself.

Uruguay 2 vs. 1 Portugal

The feeling was that if Ronaldo turned up Portugal would go through but if Ronaldo had an off day then Uruguay would go through and the latter occurred. Cavani scored in the 7th minute to give Uruguay the lead which they held on to until after half time when Pepe scored via a header to equalise for the Portuguese. The lead was short lived as Cavani scored once again in the 62nd minute to restore Uruguay’s lead. This time Uruguay held on to the lead and for large parts of the second half they stayed in their own half as Portugal huffed and puffed but could not break the Uruguayan defence. As the full time whistle was blown another star bowed out of the World Cup in the form of Ronaldo but in all likelihood this was not his last and he will be back. Uruguay continue to impress with their lethal touch and strong defence and they now face a free scoring France side in the Quarter Finals.
