Sweden 1 vs. 0 Switzerland

In what was a lacklustre knockout tie Sweden won by a goal to nil thanks to a deflected shot by Emil Forsberg in the 66th minute. The game was fairly even although Switzerland had more shots and the majority of the possession throughout. Sweden did well to hold on to their lead and make it to the Quarter-Finals of the World Cup.

This game was the polar opposite of the first tie of the day as it was filled with action and heart stopping moments. The first half went by with no real threat on goal by either team with the major talking point being how rough the Colombians were playing. In total the game had 6 yellow cards for the Colombians and arguably Barrios should have been sent off for a head butt on Henderson. The second half brought goals and more drama as Kane was wrestled down in the penalty spot following a corner. Kane stepped up and gave England the lead in the 57th minute. Colombia got more and more physical and also began to grow into the game but England held on and as it looked like they were about to reach the Quarter Final Yerry Mina for the third time this tournament powered in a header in the final seconds of stoppage time. Extra time was fairly even as the first 15 minutes were dominated by Colombia while the next 15 were dominated by England. With the end of extra time came the dreaded penalties which all England fans were hoping would be avoided. Falcao converted the first penalty and Kane levelled soon after. Cuadrado scored the second as Rashford also powered in his. Muriel scored the third penalty and Ospina saved Henderson’s penalty to give Colombia the lead. Uribe hit the crossbar for Colombia and Trippier restored parity between the two teams. Bacca stepped up for his penalty but it was saved by Pickford. The final penalty came to Dier who scored under the pressure to send England into the Quarter Finals having won on penalties for the first time in their World Cup history. The game was physical and Colombia did not deserve to win although England players also dived a few times especially Young and Maguire. England will learn a lot from this game and if they take this game by game they could do something special for their nation.
