Champions League MD 1 Review

An entertaining start to the Champions League season!

Group A

Club Brugge 0 vs. 1 Borussia Dortmund

In what was a balanced game Borussia Dortmund narrowly won in the 85th minute via a Christian Pulisic goal. Dortmund dominated the possession but Brugge had the same amount of chances that Dortmund had during the game. Dortmund move to second with the win while Brugge are 4th.

AS Monaco 1 vs. 2 Atletico Madrid

A game that was decided in the first half as all three goals came before the half-time mark. Monaco gained the lead via Grandsir in the 18th minute, but Diego Costa equalised for Atletico in the 31st minute. Gimenez scored the decisive goal right before half-time and Atletico held on to the lead for the rest of the game. Atletico had more possession of the ball but they matched Monaco when it came to shots on goal. The win moves Atletico to the top of the group while Monaco are third.

Group B

Barcelona 4 vs. 0 PSV Eindhoven

Barcelona thrashed PSV at the Camp Nou as they moved to the top of their group. Messi notched a hattrick scoring goals in the 31st, 77th, and 87th minute. Dembele added a fourth in the 74th minute. Umtiti was sent off in the 79th minute. Barcelona dominated the game with 21 shots at goal although only 9 were on target. Eindhoven move to the bottom of the table. 

Inter Milan 2-1 Tottenham

Inter Milan had a triumphant return to the Champions League as they beat Tottenham at the San Siro. After a dreary first half with opportunities on both sides and no real threat Tottenham got things rolling in the second half. Eriksen gave Tottenham the lead in the 53rd minute via a deflected shot into the net. Icardi got things back on track for Inter with a brilliant volley in the 85th minute. Vecino completed the three points for Inter in the 92nd minute. Inter move to second in the table while Tottenham are third. This was Tottenham’s third straight loss of the season. 

Group C

Red Star Belgrade 0 vs. 0 Napoli

Napoli dominated the game in Belgrade with more than 70% possession and 20 shots on goal. Red Star held on and managed to gain a point from the game which keeps them second in the group while Napoli remain third. 

Liverpool 3 vs. 2 Paris Saint Germain

In one of the more exciting games of the match day Liverpool got an emphatic win at Anfield to continue their unbeaten run this season. Sturridge gave Liverpool the lead in the 30th minute while Milner added a second from the spot in the 36th minute. Meunier got a goal back for PSG in the 40th minute via a brilliant finish. Mbappe then equalised in the 83rd minute for PSG. The game seemed to be heading for a draw but Firmino came off the bench to score in the 91st minute to give Liverpool all three points. Liverpool continue to win while PSG suffer their first loss of the season. Liverpool move to first while PSG sit bottom of the group. 

Group D

Galatasaray 3 vs. 0 Lokomotiv Moscow

Galatasaray had a comfortable win in Istanbul as they beat Lokomotiv. Rodrigues opened the scoring in the 9th minute while Derdiyok and Inan added goals in the second half. A slight blemish on the game was that Ndiaye was sent off for Galatasaray in the 87th minute. Galatasaray move to the top of what is a tough group while Moscow sit 4th. 

Schalke 04 1 vs. 1 FC Porto

Embolo and Monteiro scored a goal apiece in the second half to make sure that both teams left with a point. Porto dominated possession but when it came to chances both teams had an equal amount. Porto sit second while Schalke sit third. 

Group E

Ajax 3 vs. 0 AEK Athens

Ajax got a comfortable win in Amsterdam as they beat AEK. Tagliafico scored either side of Van de Beek’s goal to make sure that topped the group for matchday 1. AEK were second best all evening as Ajax dominated possession and had several chances to add more goals. 

Benfica 0 vs. 2 Bayern Munich

Bayern won a tough game in Lisbon as Lewandowski scored in the 10th minute and Sanches added a second in the 54th minute. Benfica had several chances to score as well but Bayern held strong at the back. Bayern move to second on goal difference while Benfica sit third. 

Group F

Shakhtar Donetsk 2 vs. 2 Hoffenheim

A close game in Donetsk as Shakhtar dominated possession but Hoffenheim had more chances on goal. Grillitsch gave Hoffenheim the lead in the 6th minute but Dos Santos equalised for Shakhtar in the 27th minute. Hoffenheim then regained their lead in the 38th minute via Nordtveit. It seemed that Hoffenheim were heading for the three points but Maycon scored in the 81st minute to give Shakhtar a point from the game. Hoffenheim and Shakhtar sit second and third respectively. 

Man City 1 vs. 2 Olympique Lyonnais

In what was one of the more surprising results of the evening Lyon left Manchester with all three points after scoring two goals in the first half. After several chances for City it was Lyon that gained the lead in the 26th minute via Cornet. Fekir then added a second in the 43rd minute via brilliant shot. Bernardo Silva did score a goal in the 67th minute but it was not enough as City fell to their first defeat of the season. City were not helped by the fact that Pep was banned from the touchline for this game. The defeat means that this is City’s fourth successive defeat in Europe while they sit last in their group. Lyon move to first in the group. 

Group G

Viktoria Plzen 2 vs. 2 CSKA Moscow

Krmencik scored two goals in the first half to send Viktoria into half time with a comfortable lead but CSKA Moscow scored two in the second half via Chalov in the 49th minute and Vlasic penalty in the 95th minute. The result means that both teams sit third and second respectively in a game that CSKA dominated. 

Real Madrid 3 vs. 0 AS Roma

Real Madrid thrashed Roma at home as Isco, Bale and Mariano scored the three goals respectively. Roma were not even remotely in the game as Real had 30 shots on goal and dominated possession. Real Madrid move top of the table with the win while Roma sit at the bottom. 

Group H

Valencia 0 vs. 2 Juventus

Valencia dominated the game when it came to shots at goal with 26 but it was Juventus that held on gained the win in Spain. Ronaldo did not have a triumphant return though as he was sent off in the 29th minute in what should have been a yellow card incident. Pjanic scored a penalty at half-time to give Juventus the lead and scored another penalty in the 51st minute to seal the win for Juventus. Juventus move to second in the table while Valencia sit third. 

Young Boys 0 vs. 3 Man United

United made it three wins in all competitions as they beat Young Boys away. Pogba scored a double in the first half while Martial added a third in the 66th minute to make sure that United topped the group after the first match day. Young Boys move to the bottom of the group
