Champions League MD 2 Review

Some exciting results!

Group A

Atletico Madrid 3 vs. 1 Club Brugge

Griezmann opened the scoring in the 28th minute but Danjuma equalised for Brugge in the 39th minute. Atletico still dominated the game and restored their lead via Griezmann once again in the 67th minute. Koke then added the icing on the cake with his goal in the 93rd minute. The win leaves Atletico second on goal difference with six points while Brugge are still pointless. 

Borussia Dortmund 3 vs. 0 AS Monaco

As predicted Dortmund continued their strong start to the season with a dominant win over a poor Monaco side. After a goalless first half Larsen, Alcacer, and Reus all scored in the second half to move Dortmund to the top of Group A. Monaco continue to struggle and move to the bottom of the group with 0 points. 

Group B

Tottenham 2 vs. 4 Barcelona

Tottenham took on Barcelona at their own game of attacking football but Barcelona had Messi and that is what made the difference for the Spanish team. Barcelona had the lead within two minutes after Coutinho slotted in the opening goal. Rakitic then added a second with a brilliant volley. Spurs were better in the second half and Kane finessed a goal in the 52nd minute to restore the deficit to one. Messi gained back the two goal advantage in the 56th minute and while Lamela scored to bring it to 2-3 in the 66th minute Messi finished Spurs off with his second in the 90th minute. Tottenham remain pointless in the group as they sit third while Barcelona lead the table.

PSV Eindhoven 1 vs. 2 Inter Milan

Inter dominated the game but PSV made it hard for the Italian team to gain three points. Rosario gave PSV the lead in the 27th minute but Inter made it level in the 44th minute via Nainggolan. Icardi then gave the lead to Inter in the 60th minute and they held on for the win. Inter are second level on points with Barca while PSV are fourth level on points with Spurs. 

Group C

Napoli 1 vs. 0 Liverpool

Insigne scored in the 90th minute to give Napoli a deserved win against Liverpool. Napoli dominated the game as Liverpool could only muster four shots with none on target. Alisson was the standout player for the reds as he made several saves to a scoreline that could easily have reached 4 or 5 nil. Liverpool have now gone three games without a win as they sit second in the table level on points with PSG. Napoli move to the top of group C with four points.

Paris Saint Germain 6 vs. 1 Red Star Belgrade

PSG got their first win of the Champions League season as they thrashed Red Star in Paris. Neymar scored a hattrick while Cavani, Di Maria, and Mbappe added the rest. Marko Marin did score a token goal for Red Star in the 70th minute. PSG move to third while Red Star are bottom although with a point to their name. 

Group D

FC Porto 1 vs. 0 Galatasaray

Marega scored in the 49th minute to give Porto a comfortable win against Galatasaray. The win takes Porto to first level on points with Schalke while Galatasaray sit third with 3 points. 

Lokomotiv Moscow 0 vs. 1 Schalke 04

McKennie scored in the 88th minute to give Schalke a hard fought three points in Moscow. Lokomotiv remain bottom of the table without any points while Schalke are second with four points. 

Group E

Bayern Munich 1 vs. 1 Ajax

Hummels opened the lead for Bayern in the 2nd minute but Mazraoui equalised for Ajax in the 22nd minute as the points were shared between the two teams. Ajax did well to challenge Bayern in what was pretty even game as Bayern continue their poor run of form. Bayern drop down to second in the group with four points while Ajax move to first on goal difference. 

AEK Athens 2 vs. 3 Benfica

In an excellent game between two teams Benfica opened the scoring in the first half with two goals as Seferovic, and Grimaldo gave Benfica the lead. Klonaridis scored two second half goals as Athens dominated the game but Semedo scored in the 74th minute to nick the win for the Lisbon side. Benfica get three point as they move to third and while Athens played well they sit bottom of the group with 0 points. 

Group F

Olympqiue Lyonnais 2 vs. 2 Shakhtar Donetsk

Lyon dominated the game but Moraes was the one who gave Shakhtar the lead right before half time. Moraes then doubled the lead in the 55th minute. Lyon restored parity within two minutes as Dembele and Dubois scored in the 70th minute and the 72th minute. Lyon lead the table with four points while Shakhtar are third with two points. 

Hoffenheim 1 vs. 2 Man City 

Belfodil gave Hoffenheim the lead in the 1st minute of the game but Aguero scored in the 7th minute to restore parity. David Silva then scored in the 87th minute of the game to give City their first points of the Champions League season. City move to second with three points while Hoffenheim remain bottom of the table with 1 point. 

Group G

AS Roma 5 vs. 0 Viktoria Plzen

Roma thrashed Viktoria in Rome as Dzeko scored a hattrick and Under and Kluivert added the rest. Roma get off the mark as they sit third level with Madrid while Viktoria are bottom of the table.

CSKA Moskva 1 vs. 0 Real Madrid

Vlasic scored in the second minute of the game and while Real huffed and puffed Moscow held on to gain a shocking victory at home. CSKA move clear at the top with four points while Real are second with three points.

Group H

Man United 0 vs. 0 Valencia

United continued their poor run of form and Valencia were perhaps unlucky to leave Old Trafford with only a point to their name. United still remain second in the group with four points although their next fixtures are back to back games against Juventus. Valencia are third with one point. 

Juventus 3 vs. 0 Young Boys

Dybala scored a hattrick in Ronaldo’s absence as Juventus continued to be the most dominant team in Europe as they lead group H with with 6 points. Young Boys sit bottom of the table with 0 points.
