Champions League MD 3 Review

Some exciting results!

Group A

Borussia Dortmund 4 vs. 0 Atletico Madrid

With Dortmund in top form and Atletico struggling a defeat was expected for the side from Madrid but a thrashing was not. A first half goal from Witsel followed by a late brace from Guerreiro and a goal from Sancho inflicted Atletico’s first defeat in the Champions League. Dortmund go clear at the top with 9 points while Atletico still firmly remain in second. 

Club Brugge 1 vs. 1 AS Monaco

Sylla gave Monaco the lead in the first half but Moraes scored within 10 minutes to restore parity as the game petered out to a draw. The teams get off the mark with a point each and the Europa League spot remains in contention for the both of them.

Group B

Barcelona 2 vs. 0 Inter Milan

Barcelona comfortably beat Inter thanks to goals from Rafael Alcantara, and Alba in each half. The two led the group and the win has given Barcelona a three point lead at the top of the table with Inter still firmly in second. 

PSV Eindhoven 2 vs. 2 Tottenham

Lozano opened the scoring in the 29th minute but Moura equalised for Tottenham 10 minutes later. Tottenham had the upper hand throughout the game and Kane gave Spurs the lead in the 54th minute. Tottenham seemed to be heading for an important win but Lloris was sent off in the 79th minute and De Jong equalised in the 87th minute to earn PSV a point. The teams remain level on points with 1 each as they fight for a Europa League spot with the knockout stages looking a distant target. 

Group C

Liverpool 4 vs. 0 Red Star Belgrade

Liverpool got an expected victory against Red Star at Anfield with goals from Firmino, and Mane with a brace from Salah. The three finally got back to winning ways and the goals will do great for Salah’s confidence. Liverpool move to the top of Group C in what is turning out to be a proper group of death. 

Paris Saint Germain 2 vs. 2 Napoli

Insigne opened the scoring for Napoli in the 29th minute as Napoli went into half time with a lead. Mario Rui then scored an own goal in the 61st minute as PSG  were brought back into the game. Mertens then restored Napoli’s lead in the 77th minute but Di Maria scored a brilliant goal in the 93rd minute to save PSG from a loss. Group C still remains too close to call.

Group D

Galatasaray 0 vs. 0 Schalke 04

Galatasaray and Schalke played out a goalless draw which helped neither team as they dropped down the table.

Lokomotiv Moscow 1 vs. 3 FC Porto

Marega and Herrera gave FC Porto a lead before Miranchuk brought Moscow back into the game. Corona then scored early in the second half to insure that Porto left Moscow with three points. Moscow remain rooted to the bottom of the group with zero points while Porto move clear at the top of the table with seven points. 

Group E

AEK Athens 0 vs. 2 Bayern Munich

After a close first half Martinez and Lewandowski scored within two minutes of each others goals in the second half to give Bayern the three points. Bayern continue their return to form with the win as they remain second in the group. 

Ajax 1 vs. 0 Benfica

A close game was only settled in the 92nd minute as Mazraoui gave Ajax the three points. Benfica played well but failed to convert their chances and hold on for the draw. Benfica remain third while Ajax remain top off the table with seven points separated by Bayern on goal difference. 

Group F

Shakhtar Donetsk 0 vs. 3 Man City

City got their revenge for last season as both Silva’s and Laporte scored to earn Pep a comfortable three points. Shakhtar remain bottom of the table but on goal difference while City move to the top of the table with the win.

Hoffenheim 3 vs. 3 Olympique Lyonnais

In a thrilling match Traore gave Lyon the lead in the 26th minute but Kramaric equalised for Hoffenheim in the 32nd minute. Kramaric then gave Hoffenheim the lead with a goal in the 47th minute but Ndombele equalised for Lyon in the 59th minute. Depay gave Lyon the lead in the 67th minute but Joelinton scored for Hoffenheim in the 92nd minute to earn them a point. Lyon still remain second while Hoffenheim are third.

Group G

Real Madrid 2 vs. 1 Viktoria Plzen

Benzema and Marcelo scored in each half while Hrosovsky added a consolation goal to give Real Madrid their first win in a couple of matches. Real remain at the top of the group while Plzen are bottom. 

AS Roma 3 vs. 0 CSKA Moskva

A double from Dzeko and a goal from Under gave Roma a comfortable win a against CSKA to keep them firmly behind Real in second. Moscow drop down to third but still remain within reach of the knockout stages but will have to earn some notable wins. 

Group H

Man United 0 vs. 1 Juventus

Juventus earned a comfortable victory at Old Trafford with a goal from Dybala. United posed no threat and while they remain second they could drop down to third if they lose in Turin. 

Young Boys 1 vs. 1 Valencia

Michy gave Valencia the lead early in the game but Young Boys dominated the 90 minutes and scored via a penalty from Hoarau in the 55th minute to earn a deserved point. The teams still remain in a fight for the Europa League place and a potential knockout round place as well.
