Champions League MD 4 Review

Expected and unexpected results. 

Group A

Atletico Madrid 2 vs. 0 Borussia Dortmund

Expectations were that Dortmund would manage another win or at least a draw in Madrid but Atletico rallied to make sure they stayed in the fight to finish top of the table. Goals from Saul, and Griezmann in each half were enough to keep Dortmund at bay. Dortmund suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions but stay at the top of the group while Atletico go level on points with them.

AS Monaco 0 vs. 4 Club Brugge

Thierry Henry was still searching for his first win as Monaco manager and probably hoped that it would come against Club Brugge but the Belgian team had other outcomes in mind. Monaco were thrashed with two goals from Vanaken and a goal each from Moraes and Vormer. Monaco now languish at the bottom of the table with a solitary point while Brugge make third place their won with four points.

Group B

Inter Milan 1 vs. 1 Barcelona

Barcelona dominated a tough game against Inter as far as stats are concerned and they seemed to have sealed the points in the 83rd minute after Malcom gave them the lead. Inter did not settle though and their main man Icardi scored the equaliser in the 87th minute to share the points with the Spanish side. Barcelona still lead the table with 10 points and Inter are still second with 7 points.

Tottenham 2 vs. 1 PSV Eindhoven

Luuk De Jong gave PSV the lead after only two minutes but Tottenham dominated the rest of the game and two goals late in the second half from Harry Kane meant that Tottenham remained within touching distance of Inter in the fight for the knockout round. PSV remain bottom of the table with 1 point while Tottenham are third with 4 points. 

Group C

Red Star Belgrade 2 vs. 0 Liverpool

In one of the more shocking results of the gameweek Red Star beat Liverpool in Belgrade to bring Liverpool’s qualification to the knockout rounds into serious doubt. Two goals from Pavkov in the first half were enough for the Serbian side. Red Star remain bottom but only a point behind PSG who are third while Liverpool drop down to second. 

Napoli 1 vs. 1 Paris Saint Germain

Bernat scored right before extra time to give PSG the lead but Insigne equalised from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute to share the points with the French side. Group C is really heating up as only two points separate Napoli in first and Red Star in fourth.

Group D

Schalke 04 2 vs. 0 Galatasaray

Goals from Burgstaller and Uth in either half secured three points for Schalke in Germany. The win means that Schalke remain second in the group with 8 points while Galatasaray remain third in the group with 4 points. 

FC Porto 4 vs. 1 Lokomotiv Moscow

Herrera, Marega, Corona, and Monteiro scored throughout the game to seal the points for Porto in Lisbon. Farfan did manage a solitary goal for Moscow in the second half. The win leaves FC Porto at the top of the table with 10 points while Lokomotiv remain bottom with 0 points. 

Group E

Bayern Munich 2 vs. 0 AEK Athens

Lewandowski scored in either half to secure points for Bayern as they remain on course to finish in a knockout spot after a difficult start to the season. Bayern went top of the table with 10 points while AEK remain bottom with 0 points.

Benfica 1 vs. 1 Ajax

Oliveira gave Benfica the lead in the first half but Tadic scored for Ajax in the second to share points between the two teams. The result means that Ajax drop down to second with 8 points while Benfica remain third with four points.

Group F

Man City 6 vs. 0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Man City continued their goal scoring form by thrashing Shakhtar 6-0 at home. A hattrick from Jesus with goals from Silva, Sterling and Mahrez were sufficient enough. City remained top of the table with 9 points while Shakhtar remained bottom of the table with 2 points. 

Olympique Lyonnais 2 vs. 2 Hoffenheim

Fekir and Ndombele gave Lyon the lead in the first half but goals from Kramaric, and Kaderabek in the second half meant that the points were shared. Lyon still remained second in the table with six points while Hoffenheim moved into third with 3 points. 

Group G

Viktoria Plzen 0 vs. 5 Real Madrid

Real thrashed Viktoria with two goals from Benzema and one each from Casemiro, Bale, and Kroos. Real remain top of the table with 9 points while Viktoria remain bottom with only one point. 

CSKA Moskva 1 vs. 2 AS Roma

Manolas gave Roma an early lead in the 4th minute but CSKA managed to equalise in the second half through Sigurosson. Pellegrini then scored 10 minutes later to restore Roma’s lead and get them an important three points. The win means that Roma remain level on points with Real while CSKA are third with 4 points. 

Group H

Juventus 1 vs. 2 Man United

Juventus seemed to be heading for three points after Ronaldo scored in the 65th minute but late goals from Mata and an own goal from Sandro gave Mourinho and United three highly important points. Juventus still lead the table with 9 points while United go second with 7 points. 

Valencia 3 vs. 1 Young Boys

Santi Mina and Soler scored two goals and one goal respectively to seal the three points for Valencia. Young Boys had managed to equalise in the 37th minute via Assale but they could not maintain their momentum. Valencia remain third with 5 points while Young Boys remain bottom with 1 point.
