Champions League MD 6 Preview

A rush to seal those final places.

Group A

Club Brugge vs. Atletico Madrid

Group A is done and dusted with Club Brugge heading to the Europa League but 1st place is still up for grabs and Atletico would need to win to ensure that they finish at the top of the group. A draw would mean that Dortmund would have to lose for them to still finish 1st.

AS Monaco vs. Borussia Dortmund

Monaco will not be playing any further part in Europe as they go into the last game fighting for a positive finish to a poor campaign. Dortmund can still finish first but have to win as anything less would mean that they finish 2nd in the group.

Group B

Inter Milan vs. PSV Eindhoven

Inter are still in the thick of things as a loss, draw or win could see them finish in different positions. A loss for Inter could see them finish second in the group only if Tottenham lost to Barcelona by a bigger margin than Inter lost to PSV. A draw would be enough only if Tottenham lose, and a win would be enough if Tottenham lose or win granted that they have a better goal difference than Spurs. PSV are just playing for pride.

Barcelona vs. Tottenham

What goes for Inter goes for Tottenham as they both will be fighting it out to see who heads to the Europa League and who qualifies alongside Barcelona into the Round of 16. In this case I think Tottenham will be heading to the Europa League.

Group C

Red Star Belgrade vs. Paris Saint Germain

The best group of them all as all four teams have something to fight for. Red Star need a win if they are to stand a chance of qualifying for the Europa League, but Liverpool will have to lose their game against Napoli. For PSG a draw would be enough if Liverpool lose or draw and could also see them move finish top of the table if the draw occurred. A loss for PSG would be enough as long as Liverpool drew or lost as well. A win would make sure that PSG would be heading for the Round of 16.

Liverpool vs. Napoli

Liverpool have to win to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. They would have to win by 2 goals or more to make sure that if PSG won it would still be enough for them to qualify sending Napoli into the Europa League. For Napoli a draw or a win would be enough although results at the PSG game would decide who finishes first or second. A tough group to call.

Group D

Schalke 04 vs. Lokomotiv Moscow

The places for the for the Round of 16 have been decided as Porto will finish 1st no matter the result and Schalke will finish 2nd no matter the result. Lokomotiv have a chance of finishing 3rd and qualifying for the Europa League but they will have to win. A draw could be enough if Galatasaray lost but goal difference would be a major decider.

Galatasaray vs. FC Porto

A win for Galatasaray would guarantee them 3rd place finish. A draw would be enough if Lokomotiv drew or lost, and a loss would be enough if Lokomotiv lost. No matter the result Porto will finish 1st.

Group E

Benfica vs. AEK Athens

Group E is done and dusted, Benfica will be heading to the Europa League in 3rd while AEK are just fighting for their pride at this stage.

Ajax vs. Bayern Munich

What has not been decided is who will finish 1st or 2nd. Ajax need a win to finish 1st while a draw or a win for Bayern would be enough to finish 1st. The teams are in good form but Bayern have been more suspect than Ajax this season.

Group F

Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Olympique Lyonnais

Shakhtar can finish in 2nd if they beat Lyon, A draw would see them finish 3rd and a loss could see them finish last if Hoffenheim won. A win for Lyon would guarantee them a 2nd place finish while they would need a massive goal difference swing to finish 1st. A draw would be enough for Lyon as well but a loss would mean that they would be heading to the Europa League.

Man City vs. Hoffenheim

Man City will finish first with a win or a draw while a loss would most likely be enough as well. Hoffenheim can still make it to the Europa League but they need to win and hope that Shakhtar lose to Lyon.

Group G

Viktoria Plzen vs. AS Roma

Plzen are 3rd and a win would secure them a place in the Europa League, a draw would be enough if CSKA also drew or lost while a loss would be enough if CSKA lost. Roma need to win to stand any chance of finishing 1st in the group but otherwise they will be heading to the Round of 16 in 2nd place.

Real Madrid vs. CSKA Moskva

Real have qualified and any result would still see them finish 1st. A win for CSKA would see them finish 3rd if Plzen lost or drew, a draw would be enough if Plzen lost, and a loss would be enough if Plzen got thrashed by Roma.

Group H

Young Boys vs. Juventus

Young Boys are heading out of Europe regardless of the result. A win for Juventus would see them finish 1st, a draw for Juventus would be enough in the case of a United loss or draw and a United win would also work but Juventus would need to have a better goal difference. A loss would also be enough for Juventus United would have to draw or lose as well.

Valencia vs. Man United

Valencia will be heading to the Europa League regardless of the result. United could still finish first but Juventus would have to lose or draw with a weaker goal difference. A draw or loss for United would see them finish 2nd in the group.
