The quest for retention goes on!
Since I was occupied elsewhere there was no preview for this game but the gist was that several players were rested with youth being given a chance. The lineup consisted of Caballero in goal with Azpi, Rudiger, Christensen, and Alonso making up the back four. Ampadu started in the Jorginho position with Kovacic and Barkley completing the midfield. Up front Willian, and Hudson-Odoi started either side of Higuain who made his debut for the club.
Without the star players around the opening 25 minutes were pretty standard as Chelsea dominated possession but failed to create any clear cut chances in front of goal. Higuain made brilliant runs throughout the game but there was no one to spot him as the players seemed to have forgotten how to play with a forward. The first goal came in the 26th minute as Willian converted a penalty. Willian had offered Higuain his penalty but Higuain declined because he did not want to open his account for Chelsea with a pen. Hudson-Odoi then scored in the 64th minute from a brilliant pass by Christensen as he cut in the box to score. Willian then completed the scoreline with a brilliant finish via a Giroud assist in the 83rd minute.
Chelsea progress to the next round of the FA Cup where we face off against United at Stamford Bridge. For Sarri this game was a good chance to test out certain combinations in midfield. Ampadu played in the Jorginho role, while Kovacic also tried it out in the second half. Chelsea are reluctant to bring in a new player as they look to promote their youth players. Another positive peace of news was the return of RLC and we should see him play more often alongside Kante, and Jorginho. Higuain did not score but his overall play was great, he should get more service in a lineup with more starting players. CHO added another goal to his tally as he put the rumours aside and now Chelsea have stated that he will stay with the club at least until the summer.
Onto Bournemouth in the Premier League as Chelsea continue their quest for a return to the Champions League. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
