Champions League Round of 16 1st Leg Review

Tottenham show United how it’s done.

AS Roma 2 vs. 1 FC Porto

After a tight first half the second half went to another level as Roma edged out a home win. Teen sensation Zaniolo scored a brace with goals in the 70th and 76th minute to give Roma a two goal lead. Adrian Lopez then got Porto a crucial away goal to take home to Portugal for the second leg. The tie is in the balance and everything is still to play for in Porto.

Man United 0 vs. 2 Paris Saint Germain

Ole and United perhaps went into this on a high and also underestimated the task at hand as they faced off against a PSG side who were without Neymar, and Cavani but still strong. United were fairly decent in the 1st half but it all went south in the 2nd. Lingard and Martial went off injured early in the half with Sanchez and Mata coming on. With pace substantially depleted PSG took advantage and Kimpembe scored in the 53rd minute via a header to give PSG the lead. Mbappé then doubled the lead in the 60th minute. PSG could have scored a couple more goals if it were not for De Gea in goal. United suffered another blow as Pogba was sent off in extra time for a 2nd yellow. With Pogba out and Martial, Lingard, and Sanchez suffering unknown injuries United face an uphill task in Paris. PSG are known for bottling it in the Champions League but they can not bottle this one.

Tottenham 3 vs. 0 Borussia Dortmund

This was supposed to be tough win for Dortmund but Tottenham showed that they are not just a Harry Kane team. After a tight 1st half with chances on either side Son opened the scoring in the 47th minute to continue his hot streak. Vertonghen then scored in the 83rd minute and Llorente scored in the 86th minute to give Dortmund a very difficult task to take into the 2nd leg. Odds are that Tottenham have one foot if not both in the quarters of the Champions League while Dortmund will have nothing to lose in the 2nd leg.

Ajax 1 vs. 2 Real Madrid

Another game in which no team scored in the 1st half as all the goals came in the 2nd. Benzema scored in the 60th minute to give Real the lead but Ziyech equalised in the 75th minute. Asensio then popped up to score the winner in the 87th minute. Real get two crucial away goals as they play the 2nd leg in Madrid and while they should make it to the quarters Ajax will have nothing to lose and all to play for.
