Champions League Round of 16 1st Leg Preview

Part two of the 1st legs!

Olympique Lyonnais vs. Barcelona

Lyon are 3rd in Ligue 1 as they fight for a top four spot with the title already on its way to Paris. Barcelona are 1st in La Liga and 7 points clear of the rest but Barcelona for the last two seasons have not been the dominant side of old as they now are more likely to grind out results then thrash away sides. Lyon should not be disheartened to face this current Barcelona team but if Barcelona are able to see out this 1st leg then they should manage to reach the next round. Barcelona will also not want to repeat last seasons fiasco against Roma while Lyon will take encouragement from that.

Liverpool vs. Bayern Munich

Klopp entertains Bayern once again as they visit Anfield for the 1st leg. Liverpool are 2nd in the Premier League behind City on goal difference with a game in hand while Bayern are 2nd in the Bundesliga only 3 points behind Dortmund who are 1st. Liverpool have had more than a week to prepare for this game while Bayern have played 2 or 3 games in that time. Bayern are not the dominant side of old and themselves are going through a transition season under new manager Niko Kovac. This should be a fiery game and one that Liverpool should feel confident in seeing out.

Atletico Madrid vs. Juventus

Atletico are 2nd in La Liga 7 points behind Barcelona while Juventus are 13 clear of the rest at the top of Serie A. Atletico themselves have struggled at times this season and Juventus are aiming for the Champions League as this is the only trophy that alludes them. The signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real was made so that they could win the big eared trophy and Juventus will feel confident that a positive result in this game would help them progress in the 2nd leg.

Schalke 04 vs. Man City

City have a league cup final on Sunday but a trip to Schalke while tough should not be a massive issue for them. Schalke are 14th in the Bundesliga and should pose no real threat to Pep’s side as they look to reach the latter stages of the Champions League by sealing a win in the 1st leg.
