Tottenham vs. Liverpool Champions League Final Preview

Which bottle job will remain a bottle job no more?

Tottenham vs. Liverpool our 2nd all English European final in 3 days as we will find out who will join Chelsea in the Super Cup final. The season ended 3 weeks ago and so both teams have had time off and training sessions to work on for this final. Tottenham’s last game was a 2-2 draw against Everton which saw them finish 4th in the League behind Chelsea. Liverpool pushed for the title until the final day as they beat Wolves 2-0 but it was not enough as City also kept on winning and won the title.

Tottenham finished 2nd in their group with 8 points as they won 2 drew 2 lost 2, they finished level on points with Inter but goal difference was enough to see them through. Tottenham then face Dortmund in the Round of 16 and beat them 4-0 on aggregate. City came up in the quarter finals and Spurs won the first leg 1-0. City then won the 2nd leg 4-3 but Spurs went through on away goals. In the semis Tottenham faced Ajax and Spurs lost the first leg 1-0. Tottenham then won the 2nd leg 2-3 and again reached the final on away goals. Luck has been a factor for Tottenham in the Champions League this season but Spurs have also shown grit and desire to get their results and so deserve to be in Madrid.

Liverpool finished 2nd in their group as well with 9 points having won 3 and lost 3, Napoli had the same goal difference but Liverpool went through on away goals. Liverpool then faced Bayern in the Round of 16 and after a nil nil draw in Liverpool they beat Bayern 1-3 in Munich. Next up was Porto in the quarters and Liverpool beat them 1-6 on aggregate. Liverpool then faced Barca in the semis and after losing the first leg 3-0 they faced an impossible task to reach the finals but they summoned that Anfield atmosphere to win 4-0 and reach the final.

Klopp and Poch are both seeking their first trophies with their respective clubs. Klopp has done better than Poch in that he has reached more finals and higher positions while Poch has only ever managed to reach semis before Madrid. Poch is seeking his first major trophy period as Klopp is now in his 3rd Champions League final. As far as the game is concerned I expect Liverpool to win but Tottenham will push them to the limit. Klopp’s tactics should see them over power Spurs. The teams fixtures in the Premier League both ended in 2-1 wins for Liverpool and a similar scoreline is expected in Madrid.

Tottenham Team Preview

Tottenham’s big boost comes as Kane is fit for them but I would rather keep the same lineup that they had in the semis as it seemed more cohesive but if Kane is fit then Kane will start. The rest of the teams should be similar to the one in the semis.

Liverpool Team Preview

Liverpool will have Keita missing but Firmino is fit and the whole team will be looking to win the final after last years heartache.

Two similar but different philosophies, two passionate managers, two teams looking to end their trophy draught. Only one can win, London will be hoping that Liverpool do and Manchester will be hoping that Tottenham do. What we do know is that it will be one hell of a game.
