Weekend Football Review

Back with a bang!

Premier League  MW 1

Liverpool 4 vs. 1 Norwich

Liverpool and Norwich kicked if off on Friday at Anfield as the Premier League finally returned. Liverpool looked shaky at first but grew into the game and eventually found their groove going forward. Norwich were playing an expansive style of football and since they were pressing forward it left gaps at the back that Liverpool could exploit. The first goal came in the 7th minute from Hanley who deflected the ball into his own net to give Liverpool the lead. SalahVan Dijk, and Origi then added three more in the first half as things quickly got out of Norwich’s hands. Pukki scored a consolation goal for Norwich in the 64th minute but the biggest concern will be the injury to Alisson who came off in the first half. Norwich looked good though and could cause excitement in the league this season. Liverpool move into 3rd with the win while Norwich are 16th

West Ham 0 vs. 5 Man City

It’s true every time we expect West Ham to cause problems for City they just get thrashed out of the park. City came into the game with the mindset of one upping Liverpool and achieved it. Jesus opened the scoring in the 25th minute, but West Ham stayed strong for the rest of the half as City dominated the game. Sterling then added the second in the 51st minute and a third in the 75th minute. Aguero came of the bench to join the party by scoring a 4th in the 86th minute via a penalty, and Sterling sealed a hattrick and City’s 5th in the 91st minute. City get a big win on opening weekend as they move to 1st from the get go while West Ham drop down to 20th.

Bournemouth 1 vs. 1 Sheffield United

The first draw of the season came to us from Bournemouth as newly promoted Sheffield United got their first point of the season. It was a very close game of football and neither side really deserved to lose but after a cagey first half Mepham gave Bournemouth the lead in the 62nd minute. Sheffield did not back down and Billy Sharp popped up in the 88th minute to nick a point for the blades. Bournemouth are 8th while Sheffield are 9th

Burnley 3 vs. 0 Southampton

Burnley got off to winning ways in emphatic fashion as they beat Southampton comfortably after a cagey first half. A 15 minute period of brilliance from Burnley in the 2nd half was enough as Ashley Barnes gave them the lead in the 63rd minute before doubling it in the 70th minute. Gudmundsson then added a 3rd in the 75th minute to seal a great win for the clarets. Burnley moved into 5th with the win while Southampton drop down to 17th

Crystal Palace 0 vs. 0 Everton

The first goalless draw came from Selhurst Park as Palace held Everton to a draw. Everton dominated the game stats wise but made no real inroads as they failed to put the ball in the back of the net. Palace stayed strong for the point move into 10th while Everton are 11th.

Watford 0 vs. 3 Brighton

Watford fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Brighton who seemed to have improved on their away form as they got a massive win. Doucouré scored an own goal in the 28th minute to give Brighton a shock lead but Brighton stayed strong as Watford began to test the defence. Andone added a 2nd for Brighton in the 65th minute, and Maupay added a 3rd for the Seagulls in the 77th minute. Brighton fans left London ecstatic as they finished the weekend 4th while Watford drop into 18th

Tottenham 3 vs. 1 Aston Villa

A London Derby to end the Saturday as Spurs took on Villa in an interesting game of football. Villa started the game confidently as they attacked Spurs in the 1st half and got a lead in the 9th minute thanks to McGinn. Villa dominated the first half but could not add to their tally. Spurs returned for the 2nd with a point to prove and began their siege of the Villa goal. Shot after shot was saved or deflected but Ndombele scored in the 73rd minute through a long range effort to finally bring Spurs back into the game. The goal deflated Villa and Kane scored in the 86th and 90th minute to seal 3 points. Tottenham move into 6th while Villa drop down into 15th.

Leicester 0 vs. 0 Wolverhampton

Two evenly matched sides could not find a fault in each other as Leicester and Wolves were held to a goalless draw. Leicester dominated possession but could not capitalise while Wolves stayed solid and had chances of their own. Leicester move to 12th while Wolves are right behind them at 13th

Newcastle 0 vs. 1 Arsenal

Arsenal travelled to Newcastle for their first away game of the season as Newcastle began their new season under local lad Steve Bruce. Newcastle did well to challenge Arsenal as they held the Gunners to a goalless draw in the first half. A mistake in the 58th minute though proved enough as Aubameyang latched onto a pass to seal the win for Arsenal. For Arsenal, Pepe, Luiz, Ceballos, and Lacazette all started on the bench and so a 0-1 victory will be one they will be fine with while also keeping a clean sheet away from home. Arsenal move into 7th while Newcastle are 14th

Ligue 1 – MW 1

Ligue 1 kicked off on Friday with a big 0-3 win for Lyon away at Monaco. Dembele, Depay, and Tousart scored the goals as Monaco seem to be suffering even under Jardim. Marseille lost to Stade Reims 0-2 for what was a shock win for the away side. Lille started the season with a tough 2-1 win against Nantes, and PSG began the season in typical fashion as they beat Nimes 3-0 with CavaniMbappe, and Di Maria all on target. Lyon, PSG, Angers, and Stade Reims make up the top four at the end of MW 1.
