Weekend Football Review

Football never disappoints!

Premier League MW 4

Southampton 1 vs. 1 Man United

Southampton and United kicked off the weekend with an entertaining game. United were looking for an important win after losing at Old Trafford and started off well with Daniel James scoring another good goal to give the Red Devils a lead in the 10th minute. United dominated the first half but failed to create decent opportunities to increase their lead. Southampton came out for the 2nd half looking for a way back and took the game to United. Vestergaard popped up for a header in the 58th minute to equalise for the home team. Danso was then sent off for a 2nd yellow and United had an opportunity to win against a 10 man side but failed and Southampton earned a point. Southampton move up to 13th with the point while United drop down to 8th.

Crystal Palace 1 vs. 0 Aston Villa

After a cagey 1st half this London derby took an exciting turn in the 2nd as Trezeguet was sent off for Villa in the 54th minute. Palace took advantage with the extra man and Ayew gave the Eagles a lead in the 73rd minute. Villa then thought they had rescued a point in the final minutes as they had the ball in the net but the referee ruled it out as he judged that Grealish has dived prior to the ball hitting the net. Replay’s showed that Cahill had literally tackled Grealish and there was no dive at all but VAR did not call it and so Palace got three points. Palace climb up to 4th while Villa drop into 18th as VAR has another doubtful game.

Leicester 3 vs. 1 Bournemouth

Leicester were looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and Vardy got the Foxes going in the 12th minute after a brilliant lobbed effort in trademark Vardy style. Bournemouth equalised three minutes later thanks to Callum Wilson as the game caught pace. Vardy then turned proveder in the 41st minute as he cut back the ball for Tielemans who put Leicester back in the lead. Vardy then sealed the deal in the 73rd minute as they maintained a positive start to the season. Leicester climb up to 3rd as they stake a claim for a top four place with the rest struggling while Bournemouth drop into 15th.

Man City 4 vs. 0 Brighton

City got a normal win for themselves as they put four past Brighton as expected. De Bruyne got the lead in the 2nd minute and for a while it was radio silence but Aguero doubled the lead 3 minutes before half time. Aguero then got his 2nd in the 55th minute and Bernardo Silva came off the bench to score the 4th in the 79th minute. City remain 2 points behind Liverpool in 2nd while Brighton drop down to 16th.

Newcastle 1 vs 1 Watford

Will Hughes got a lead for Watford in the 2nd minute as they looked for their first points of the season but they could not capitalise on early momentum and Schar equalised for Newcastle in the 41st minute. Neither team could go any further as far as the scoreline is considered and so they shared a point as Newcastle move up to 14th while Watford get off the mark but remain bottom of the table.

West Ham 2 vs. 0 Norwich

A potential top 10 clash ended with a Hammers win as Pellegrini and his side begin to catch momentum after a shaky start. Haller got his 3rd in the 2 games as he gave West Ham the lead in the 24th minute. Yarmolenko then scored the 2nd in the 56th minute as Norwich had no answer. West Ham climb up to 7th while Norwich drop down to 19th as they enter an international break to rethink.

Burnley 0 vs. 3 Liverpool

Liverpool struggled to get going as they usually have this season but eventually got their record 13th win in a row as they beat Burnley away. Wood broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute as he scored an own goal while Mane doubled the lead in the 37th minute. Firmino then sealed the deal in the 80th minute as Liverpool maintain their perfect start to the season and sit top. Burnley drop down to 12th.

Everton 3 vs. 2 Wolverhampton

Another potential top 10 clash started off Super Sunday with an exciting game as Everton took on Wolves. Richarlison gave Everton the lead in the 5th minute but Saiss equalised for Wolves in the 9th minute. Iwobi then restored the lead for Everton in the 12th minute to cap off a blistering 15 minutes. The game then stayed silent until the final 15 minutes as Jimenez equalised in the 75th minute. Richarlison then restored the lead once again the 80th minute as Boly was sent off for a 2nd yellow in the 95th minute and Everton were able to hold on. Everton climb up to 6th while Europa League seems to be catching up to Wolves as they suffer their first defeat and still seek their first win sitting 17th.

Arsenal 2 vs. 2 Tottenham

The fiery North London Derby capped off an entertaining weekend of Premier League football as both teams searched for a win after defeats last weekend. Eriksen got the ball rolling in the 10th minute as he gave Tottenham the lead as Arsenal looked like they were still warming up. Arsenal provided no threat for much of the 1st half and a brain fart tackle from Xhaka on Son in the 40th minute allowed Kane to double Spurs lead in via the penalty spot. It was looking like Spurs would romp to a victory but Lacazette latched on to a Pepe pass and smashed the ball into the net to get one back for Arsenal in the 46th minute. Arsenal started the 2nd half positively as Tottenham looked like they were on the back foot. Aubameyang latched on to a Guendouzi pass to equalise in the 71st minute and send fans into delirium. The momentum though did not carry Arsenal any further and Sissoko missed an easy chance in the dying minutes for the two teams to share points. Arsenal drop to 5th while Spurs drop to 9th as Leicester think that this might be another season where the usual teams struggle.

La Liga MW 3

Sevilla drew with Celta Vigo 1-1, Barcelona struggled to a draw with Osasuna 2-2, Atletico fought back to beat Eibar 3-2 in the final minutes of the game, and Real Madrid drew against Villareal 2-2 thanks to two goals from Bale. La Liga is taking an interesting turn this season as key players are missing for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, the return of Messi, Suarez, Griezmann, Hazard, Mendy etc should really help the two teams bounce back post the international break. Atletico, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla and Levante make up the top four while Real sit 5th and Barcelona sit 8th.

Serie MW 2

Milan got their first win of the season with a tough 1-0 win against Brescia, Juventus beat Napoli in an amazing 4-3 game as Juventus took a 3-0 lead in the 1st half only for Lozano to come on in the 2nd and Napoli to comeback 3-3. The game looked like it was heading for a draw as it was the most deserved outcome but Koulibaly scored an own goal to give Juventus the win. Lazio and Roma drew 1-1 in their local derby while Inter beat Cagliari 1-2 as Lukaku scored the winning penalty while listening to racist chants from the fans. Finally Torino beat Atalanta 2-3. Inter, Juventus, Torino and Lazio make up the top four after 2 weeks.

Bundesliga MW 3

Leipzig beat Monchengladbach 1-3, Leverkusen drew with Hoffenheim, Bayern thrashed Mainz 6-1 as they hit their stride, Union Berlin got a shock win against Dortmund 3-1, and Frankfurt beat Dusseldorf 2-1. Leipzig remain the perfect team as they sit top while Bayern, Wolfsburg, and Leverkusen make up the top four, Dortmund are close in 5th.

Ligue MW 4

PSG beat Metz 0-2, Lyon drew with Bordeaux 1-1 as they dropped points, Lille lost to Stade Reims 2-0, Rennes lost to Nice 1-2, and Monaco drew against Strasbourg 2-2. A shocking weekend in Ligue 1 as the usual suspects lost while PSG took advantage. PSG, Rennes, Nice, and Angers make up the top four with all four teams on 9 points, Lyon drop down to 5th.
