It’s back and Chelsea are back!
After an year away from the Champions League and a successful campaign in the Europa League last season Chelsea are back to where we belong, in Europe’s most prestigious competition. Chelsea are in group H along with Valencia, Ajax and Lille. Ajax showed what they could do last season and Lille were great in Ligue 1 while Valencia have suffered of late with turmoil in their camp. It is not an easy group to get out of but Chelsea have shown plenty of promise and have plenty of quality to get into the knockout stages of the Champions League. First up on day 1 are Valencia.
Valencia finished 4th in La Liga last season and finished 3rd in their Champions League group to then move to the Europa League. In the Europa League they lost to eventual finalists Arsenal who lost to Chelsea in the final. This season Valencia are 13th in La Liga having won 1 drawn 1 and lost 2. They recently sacked Marcelino after some problems and the sacking did not go down too well with the players or the fans. Marcelino had been successful in his time and his replacement has not shown that promise at this early stage. Valencia have a really good squad of players like Gaya, Rodrigo, Cillessen, Garay, Guedes, Cheryshev etc but the management has not been great and the morale is not as up beat as it once was. All that aside though Lampard will know that taking Valencia lightly will create problems for Chelsea because there is plenty of quality to get a win.
Chelsea go into this game having beaten Wolves 2-5 away from home using a 3-4-3 formation and looking impressive throughout. The youth is firing on all cylinders and Tammy is leading by example from the front the striker has 7 goals in his last 3 games and long may his form continue. Lampard has mixed the squad well and with more players slowly returning from injury the depth is looking good ahead of a tough period of fixtures.
Chelsea Team Preview
Lampard stated that Kante, Emerson and Rudiger would miss the game due to injury while Hudson-Odoi, and Reece James would not feature for now. I expect Kepa to start in goal, Alonso, Zouma, Christensen, and Azpilicueta to make up a back four. Jorginho, Kovacic, and Mount to make up a midfield 3, and Pulisic, Tammy, and Pedro to start up front.
Starting XI Prediction
Let’s get this campaign off to a great start! COME ON CHELSEA!!!
