Weekend Football Review

Football never disappoints!

Premier League MW 5

Liverpool 3 vs. 1 Newcastle

In what was supposed to be a routine win for Liverpool, Newcastle were the team to draw first blood. Jetro Willems scored a screamer to give Newcastle the lead in the 7th minute but it did not last long as Mane equalised in the 28th minute. Mane then doubled the lead in the 40th minute and Salah sealed the deal in the 2nd half. Liverpool stay top of the table 5 points clear of City with 5 wins in 5. Newcastle drop into the relegation zone at 18th.

Brighton 1 vs. 1 Burnley

After a pale first half things got going in the 2nd as Maupay gave Brighton the lead in the 51st minute. The Seagulls thought they were heading for 3 points but Hendrick popped up and equalised for Burnley in the 91st minute to steal a point. Brighton remain 16th in the table while Burnley drop into 14th.

Man United 1 vs. 0 Leicester

A sort of anti climatic game as Rashford scored an 8th minute penalty that was enough for the whole game and United to seal three points. It was though Leicester would win the game but they did not make enough of an impact and United were relatively poor after getting the lead. Three points are three points though and United climb up to 4th while Leicester drop into 5th.

Sheffield United 0 vs. 1 Southampton

This was bound to be a cagey game and it was for large parts of it but it took an amazing solo goal by new signing Djenepo to seal three points for Southampton. Sheffield drop into 15th while Southampton continue their rise as they move into 10th.

Tottenham 4 vs. 0 Crystal Palace

Tottenham smashed Palace at home as Son scored two, Aanholt scored an own goal, and Lamela scored as well. All games came in the first half as Palace at least restricted Spurs to four. It was a much needed win for Tottenham as they move into 3rd while Palace drop all the way down to 12th.

Norwich 3 vs. 2 Man City

The shock of the weekend and potentially a defining game in the season took place at Carrow Road as Norwich against all odds and expectations beat City. People were guessing how many goals City would win by due to Norwich playing a pretty expansive style the favourite number was 6 but it was Norwich who scored first. McLean popped up to head Norwich into the lead in the 18th minute and 10 minutes later Pukki gave a brilliant assist to Cantwell who doubled the lead in the 28th minute. The 2nd half started bright for City as Aguero got one back for the Champions in the 45th minute, but Pukki scored a 3rd for Norwich after Otamendi lost the plot at the back. Rodrigo scored from distance in the 88th minute but it was too little too late as Norwich sealed an important and massive win. Norwich have been playing expansive football but for this game they defended well first and then used their good forward play to counter well and damage City. City are looking very poor with Laporte injured and Fernandinho might be thrown in at centre back. Norwich climb out of the relegation zone into 13th while City stay 2nd but are now 5 points behind Liverpool.

Bournemouth 3 vs. 1 Everton

Another interesting game as Everton continue their shaky form by losing against Bournemouth who looked impressive. Callum Wilson gave Bournemouth the lead in the 23rd minute and Calvert Lewin equalised for Everton in the 44th minute. Ryan Fraser restored the lead for Bournemouth in the 67th minute and Wilson scored his 2nd and Bournemouth’s third in the 72nd minute. Everton could not reply back drop down into 11th while Bournemouth climb up to 9th.

Watford 2 vs. 2 Arsenal

Flores was looking to ignite a spark in his first game back managing Watford but for the first 45 minutes it looked like Arsenal were heading for a big win. Aubameyang scored two goals in the first half to give the Gunners a good lead going into the 2nd half but the team seemed to have collectively decided that 2 goals were enough. Cleverley got a goal back for Watford in the 53rd minute as Watford began to dominate the game, Arsenal had no answer. Luiz then brought down Pereyra in the box and the Watford player converted his penalty level the scoreline. Watford had a sleuth of chances to win the game but Leno made some good saves to manage a point for the Gunners. 31 shots by Watford compared to 7 by Arsenal as the Hornets as they remain bottom of the table but now with 2 points. Arsenal drop into 7th with the draw.

Aston Villa 0 vs. 0 West Ham

A cagey London derby ended in a nil nil draw as both teams managed a point with Masuaku getting sent off late on for West Ham. West Ham drop into 8th while Villa move out of the relegation zone and into 17th.

Bundesliga MW 4

Monchengladbach beat Koln 0-1, Dortmund beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-0, Frankfurt lost to Augsburg 2-1, and Bayern and Leipzig drew 1-1. Dormtund re enter the race even at this relatively early stage but Leipzig still lead the table. Dortmund, Freiburg, and Bayern make up the top four.
