Champions League MD 1 Review

Back with a bang!

Group A

Club Brugge 0 vs. 0 Galatasaray

A pretty even game in Belgium as neither team could get one over the other. In a group with PSG and Real Madrid these two teams are most likely fighting it out for the Europa League spot. For now though Brugge are 2nd and Galatasaray are 3rd. 

Paris Saint Germain 3 vs. 0 Real Madrid

PSG got off to a brilliant start as they beat Real 3-0 at home. PSG were without Mbappe, Neymar, and Cavani but had Icardi and Di Maria upfront which are not bad backups. Di Maria scored two goals in the first half and Meunier came off the bench to score a 3rd in the final minutes of the game. Real continue their poor form as pressure continues to pile on Zidane to get results. PSG move to the top of the group while Real move to the bottom. 

Group B

Bayern Munich 3 vs. 0 Red Star Belgrade

Bayern had 33 shots agains Red Star as they put three past the Serbian side. Coman scored in the first half while Lewandowski, and Muller added two more in the final 10 minutes of the game. Bayern move to the top of the group as Red Star fall to the bottom. 

Olympiakos 2 vs. 2 Tottenham

Tottenham got off to a brilliant start as Kane and Moura scored within four minute of each other in the first half to give the London side a 2-0 lead but Podence scored right before half time to give the Greeks hope. Valbuena then scored a penalty in the 2nd half to level the scoreline as Olympiakos managed a point. Tottenham move to 2nd while Olympiakos are 3rd, both teams with 1 point. 

Group C

Dinamo Zagreb 4 vs. 0 Atalanta

Leovac opened the scoring in the 10th minute and Orsic scored 3 more over the course of the game as Zagreb demolished Atalanta at home. It is relatively fine margins for 2nd and 3rd in the group and Atalanta will feel they have fallen a step behind. Zagreb move to the top while Atalanta move to the bottom.

Shakhtar Donetsk 0 vs. 3 Man City

Mahrez and Gundogan scored in the first half while Jesus scored in the 2nd half as City put three past Shakhtar with their make shift defence of Fernandinho and Otamendi. City move to 2nd with the win while Shakhtar are 3rd.

Group D

Atletico Madrid 2 vs. 2 Juventus

After a tight first half in Madrid Cuadrado put Juventus in the lead in the 48th minute while Matuidi doubled the lead in the 65th minute. Atletico though came back with Savic and Herrera scoring in the final two minutes to take a point for themselves from the game. Juventus are 2nd while Atletico are 3rd. 

Bayer Leverkusen 1 vs. 2 Lokomotiv Moskva

Krychowiak opened the scoring for Lokomotiv in the 16th minute but Howedes scored an own goal equalising for Bayer in the 25th minute. Barinov then restored the lead in the 37th minute as Lokomotiv held on for the win. Lokomotiv lead the group while Bayer drop to the bottom. 

Group E

Red Bull Salzburg 6 vs. 2 Genk

Salzburg thrashed Genk at home in an entertaining game of football. 19 year old Haland opened the scoring in the 2nd minute and scored a 2nd in the 34th minute. Hee-chan then scored a 3rd for Salzburg in the 36th minute while Lucumi got one back for Genk in the 40th minute. Haland then completed a first half hattrick in the 45th minute and Szoboszlai scored a 5th right before half time. Samatta scored a 2nd for Genk in the 52nd minute but Ulmer scored a 6th for Salzburg in the 66th minute. Salzburg get a massive win and a big goal difference as they move to the top with Genk at the bottom. 

Napoli 2 vs. 0 Liverpool

A tight game until the final 10 minutes as Robertson conceded a penalty in the 82nd minute which Mertens converted to give Napoli the lead. Llorente then came off the bench to score a 2nd for Napoli in extra time as they got an important win against holders Liverpool. Napoli move 2nd while Liverpool are 3rd. 

Group F

Borussia Dortmund 0 vs. 0 Barcelona

Dortmund and Barcelona played out a tight goalless draw as neither side could break down the other with Ter Stegen making some important saves. Barcelona are 3rd while Dortmund are 4th in the group. 

Inter Milan 1 vs. 1 Slavia Praha

Olayinka broke the deadlock for Slavia Praha after a tight first half in the 62nd minute as the Czech side got a shock lead against Inter. It looked like Prague were heading for a big win but Barella on his Champions League debut volleyed in an equaliser in the 92nd minute to seal a point for the home team. Prague lead the group while Inter are 2nd with all four teams on 1 point. 

Group G

Benfica 1 vs. 2 RB Leipzig

Tim Werner scored two 2nd half goals to give Leipzig a lead in the final 10 minutes after a cagey game. Seferovic got one back for Benfica in the 84th minute but Leipzig held on and sealed 3 points. Leipzig move to the top while Benfica are at the bottom. 

Olympique Lyon 1 vs. 1 Zenit

Azmoun scored for Zenit in the 41st minute to get an important lead but Depay converted a penalty int he 51st minute to bring Lyon back into the game. The teams could not break each others defences after that as they settled for a point. Zenit are 2nd while Lyon are 3rd.

Group H

Ajax 3 vs. 0 Lille

Promes, Alvarez, and Tagliafico scored over the 90 minutes as Lille had no response. Ajax sealed an important win in a tough group as they move to the top while Lille move the bottom.
