Weekend Football Review

Top four not as predicted!

Premier League MW 6

Southampton 1 vs. 3 Bournemouth

Ake and Harry Wilson scored in the first half for Bournemouth before Southampton got one back in the 2nd half via a Ward-Prowse penalty. Bournemouth then sealed the deal in the 95th minute thanks to Callum Wilson as they got 3 very important points. Southampton drop down to 13th while Bournemouth climb up to 6th with the win.

Leicester 2 vs. 1 Tottenham

A game riddled with VAR as Leicester got an early lead only for it to be chalked off after Ayoze Perez had been judged offside. Kane then went down the other end and gave Tottenham the lead with a decent finish. Aurier then scored in the 2nd half only for his goal to be denied by VAR and Leicester then went down the other end and equalised via Pereira. Leicester began to pile on the pressure thanks to the goal and Maddison made space for himself in the 85th minute and scored a brilliant goal to seal the three points for Leicester. A big win for the Foxes in the top 6 context as they move to 3rd in the table while Tottenham drop down to 7th.

Burnley 2 vs. 0 Norwich

Chris Wood scored in the 10th and 14th minute to give Burnley a 2-0 lead that Norwich were unable to make up as they fell to a loss after last weeks heroics against Man City. Burnley break into the top 10 as they move into 9th while Norwich drop down into 16th.

Everton 0 vs. 2 Sheffield United

Yerry Mina scored an own goal in the 40th minute to give Sheffield the lead and Mousset scored in the 79th minute to double the lead for the Blades as they got a massive 3 points. The pressure piles on Marco Silva and Everton as they lose two games in a row and drop down to 14th while Sheffield move up into 10th, part of the group of teams with 8 points.

Man City 8 vs. 0 Watford

Watford did so well last weekend to fight back and draw against Arsenal but they faced a City side in anger after their defeat to Norwich and it did not go well. David Silva scored within a minute, Aguero, Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, and Otamendi then scored within 20 minutes to give City a 5-0 lead with 70 minutes to go. Watford were looking at 20-0 scoreline but they restricted City to 3 more as Bernardo Silva added two more in the 2nd half and De Bruyne sealed the deal late in the game. The only loser in the game on the City side was Sterling who stayed on the bench and could not add to his tally. City remain 2nd but now with a goal difference of 18 while Watford remain bottom of the table happy that they won’t face an agitated City everyday.

Newcastle 0 vs. 0 Brighton

Saturday ended on a bummer as Newcastle and Brighton played out a nil nil draw with neither team staking a claim for 3 points. Newcastle though do move up to 17th with the point while Brighton move up as well into 15th.

Crystal Palace 1 vs. 1 Wolverhampton

After a tight 1st half Dendoncker deflected into his own net to give Palace the lead int he 46th minute. Wolves have been dismally poor largely due to Europa League duty and looked like they would lose another game but Jota equalised in the 95th minute to steal a point for the away team. Saiss had earlier been sent off for Wolves in the 73rd minute. Palace remain 12th while remain 19th.

West Ham 2 vs. 0 Man United

Ole seems to be losing the grip on the wheel as United slumped to a 2-0 defeat against West Ham. The teams were largely poor for the first 44 minutes but Yarmolenko popped up right before half time to give the Hammers a lead. United could not reply back in the 2nd half and Cresswell scored a brilliant free kick to seal the win for Pellegrini. West Ham climb up to 5th with the win while United drop down into 8th.

Arsenal 3 vs. 2 Aston Villa

A London derby which began with Villa taking the lead as McGinn scored in the 20th minute. Maitland-Niles was then sent off right before half time as Arsenal stared at defeat. Pepe scored his first goal for Arsenal via the spot in the 59th minute as Emery came back into the game. Wesley then went down the other end and restored Villa’s lead. Chambers then equalised for the Gunners in the 81st minute and Aubameyang scored a free-kick to get a win in the 84th minute. 3 massive points for Arsenal in a week where Chelsea, Spurs, and United all lost as they move to a familiar 4th while Villa drop down into 18th.
