Chelsea 7 vs. 1 Grimsby Carabao Cup 3rd Round Review

The youth are here to stay!

Chelsea got a comprehensive win and Lampard’s first home win of the season as we beat Grimsby Town 7-1. The clean sheet still alludes this team but the win was a massive plus point especially with the players that were involved. Lampard selected a youthful XI which was largely expected. Caballero started in goal, Alonso, Guehi, Zouma, and James made up the defence. Gilmour and Barkley made up the midfield two while Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, and Pedro played behind Michy.

Chelsea got off to a brilliant start after Barkley made an impressive run and gave the Blues a lead in the 4th minute. Michy Batshuayi then added a second in the 7th minute with a strikers finish as it looked like we would be heading for a route. Matt Green though gave Grimsby a lifeline as he produced a brilliant finish to make it 2-1 in the 19th minute. Grimsby held on for most of the 1st half but Zouma was penalised in the 43rd minute and Pedro converted the penalty that came after. 3-1 at half time as Chelsea looked to seal the deal in the 2nd half.

Chelsea took some time to get going in the 2nd half and Zouma scored a 4th in the 56th minute as he tapped in a brilliant cross by Reece James. It was Reece James 2nd assist after also assisting for Michy’s goal in the first half. Lampard then brought on Maatsen in place of Alonso, and Tino Anjorin in place of Pedro as it completed youth revolution. Reece James then added a brilliant 5th goal in the 82n minute finishing from outside of the box while Michy added a 6th in the 86th minute via a Pulisic assist. Hudson-Odoi sealed the deal in the 89th minute with a great solo goal to cap off a good return.

Player wise the game was had many brilliant performances even though it was against Grimsby. Caballero had little to do in goal, Alonso had a slower paced game which he handled well, Guehi and Zouma were solid at the back with Guehi having a brilliant debut. Reece James was my man of the match with 2 assists and goal as I can’t wait for him to become a centre piece of this team. Gilmour was really good in the Jorginho role as he controlled the game well with some passes that were not great. Barkley was ok, apart from the goal he really looked like a passenger and failed to pick up several good runs by Pulisic, and CHO throughout the game. Pedro was good, Pulisic got an assist but still searches for his first goal, The American youngster needs time and every fan should be willing to give him that time as he did work hard throughout the game. The goal will come and it did not help that Michy was sticking close to the right hand side there by bringing with him defenders who crowded Pulisic’s flank as opposed to Hudson-Odoi’s. Hudson-Odoi had a tough 20 minutes but came into his flow soon after and capped off a good night with a better goal. Michy was good upfront and showed he is a deadly finisher. Maatsen and Anjorin were solid when they came on Maatsen showed brilliant pace while Anjorin was RLCesque as he himself could have scored. Chelsea could easily have had a 3 or 4 more goals with Michy and Pulisic missing a couple but a great night for the youth and Lampard.

Chelsea 7 Grimsby 1 Lampard happy youth are fun!.
