Midweek Football Review

Shocks galore!

Carabao Cup 3rd Round

Arsenal 5 vs. 0 Nottingham Forest

Arsenal played a youthful team for this fixture and were rewarded as Martinelli opened the scoring in the 31st minute. Nottingham kept it 1-0 until the 70th minute but Holding, Willock, Nelson, and Martinelli scored in the final 20 minutes to seal the deal. Martinelli especially looks like a good prospect while Tierney, Bellerin, and Holding will be welcome additions to the Arsenal squad.

Colchester 0 (4) vs. (3) 0 Tottenham

Colchester held Tottenham to a nil nil draw and then beat them on penalties as Moura, and Eriksen missed their spot kicks. Tottenham were really only playing three youth players and should have had enough by the end to beat Colchester but their search for a trophy goes on. The pressure is starting to pile on Poch and co.

Preston North End 0 vs. 3 Man City

Sterling, Jesus, and an own goal by Ledson all occurred in the first half as Man City dispatched of Preston comfortably. Pep played a fully changed defence with three youth players and Cancelo who must be thinking why he joined City because all he can get right now is Carabao Cup games. Foden also played.

MK Dons 0 vs. 2 Liverpool

Klopp played a front three of youth players while also playing a young right back as Liverpool saw off MK Dons. Milner scored right before half time and Hoever the right back scored in the 69th minute. Players rested and progression to the next round caps off a good day for Liverpool.

Man United 1 (5) vs. (3) 1 Rochdale

United rotated to the best of their capability but still had a strong team with only Chong, and Greenwood being the youth players. Pogba, Wan Bissaka, Lingard etc all started as it looked like it would be a routine win over Rochdale. Rochdale kept it tight for around 65 minutes as United just plodded on but Greenwood scored in the 68th minute to finally break the deadlock. 16 year old Luke Matheson had other plans in mind and scored in the 76th minute to take the game to penalties. Keohane missed his penalty as United dispatched all of theirs to seal the win and eventually progress. The pressure continues to pile on Ole.

La Liga MW 6

Barcelona beat Villarreal 2-1, Atletico beat Real Mallorca 0-2, and Real Madrid beat Osasuna 2-0. Routine wins for the three teams as Real are top of the table while Atletico are 2nd and a point behind them. Bilbao and Granada make up the top four while Barcelona are 5th.

Serie MW 5

Juventus came back from 1 nil down to beat Brescia 1-2, Roma lost to Atalanta 0-2, Napoli lost to Cagliari 0-1, and Inter beat Lazio 1-0. Roma and Napoli suffer some tough defeats while Inter continue to go on in typical Conte fashion with a very solid defence. Inter make it 5/5 as they sit top while Juventus, Atalanta, and Napoli make up the top four.

Ligue MW 7

Marseille drew with Dijon, Monaco finally managed to win as they beat Nice 3-1, Lyon drew with Brest 2-2, Lille beat Strasbourg 2-0, and PSG lost to Stade Reims 0-2. Ligue 1 is looking like it will be more entertaining than the last few seasons as PSG lose their 2nd game. PSG still lead but are level on points with Angers who are 2nd. Lille and Nantes make up the top four while Monaco move out of the relegation zone into 18th.
