Chelsea 2 vs. 0 Brighton Review

First home win and clean sheet in the League!

Chelsea made it tough for themselves but eventually Lampard got his first home win of the season and a clean sheet as we beat Brighton in the 2nd half. Lampard selected a speculative line up as Kepa started in goal, Alonso, Tomori, Christensen, and Azpilicueta in defence. Apparently Zouma is ill while Reece James was on the bench. Jorginho, Barkley, and Mount started in the midfield with Kovacic on the bench and Kante suffering a slight niggle. Tammy, Willian and Pedro started up front with Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, and Michy on the bench.

The first half was dominated by Chelsea with several chances missed as Mount hit the post from a free kick which Tammy should have headed in, Pedro, Willian, and Barkley all missed great opportunities, and Alonso also missed one as well. Chelsea went into half time with all the stats in their favour except the one that matters which is the scoreline. For the 2nd half Chelsea started in similar fashion although Brighton forced Kepa to make some good saves. Mount pressed well throughout the game and nicked the ball from a Brighton player to break into the box and get a penalty. Jorginho stepped up to give Chelsea the lead in the 50th minute. Brighton had a great chance to level the score line but went just wide. Hudson-Odoi, and Michy were brought on and Hudson-Odoi provided a brilliant surging run for Willian to finish as Chelsea doubled the lead in the 76th minute. Kovacic was the third sub as Chelsea saw out the game in a professional manner.

Player wise Kepa was great and finally got a clean sheet to his name, the defence was solid with Tomori standout again. Tomori is showing that he could easily be in the Chelsea team for many seasons to come and covered Alonso down the left on several occasions. Jorginho was the other standout player on the pitch and I get that people were like Gilmour is great we don’t need Jorginho but really Grimsby is a few levels bellow the Premier League or Europe so start putting some respect on Jorginho’s name. Barkley was poor and really did himself no favours, Barkley was too slow to release balls and just looks lost a lot of the times. Mount was great as he ran all over the pitch making tackles creating chances and showing initiative. Pedro was ok while Willian was Willian. If you have been watching Chelsea for 5 or 6 seasons you know that Willian will run around the pitch and show energy and occasionally he will chip in with a goal while also making you pull your hair out on several occasions, Willian’s best season was in 15/16 when everyone around him was worse than him. Tammy worked hard but could not get a goal, again he needs time he has had a great start but it’s early days. Don’t go crazy when he scores goals and don’t go crazy when he does not, what Chelsea need is consistency and hopefully with time that will come. Hudson-Odoi was great when he came on and got an assist while Kovacic sured up the midfield. Michy was good but really had no time to make an impact. I really wanted Pulisic to get a start because Lille is tougher opposition but for some reason or the other he is not getting a chance at the moment.

Chelsea move up to 6th in the league with 3 wins 2 draws and 2 losses. Next up is Lille in France before a trip to Southampton before the bummer which is the International break. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
