Weekend Football Review

Things are heating up!

Premier League MW 7

Sheffield United 0 vs. 1 Liverpool

Liverpool are beginning to have the luck and scrape through results as Champions elect would. Liverpool made it 7 out of 7 in the 70th minute as Wijnaldum’s shot went through the legs of Dean Henderson after he had caught the ball. A goalkeeping 1o1 error and one that was anomaly in what was a great performance by the Sheffield United shot stopper. Sheffield had a few chances of their own and really took the game to Liverpool in the 2nd half. Van Dijk made several key interceptions and guided Liverpool to the three points. Liverpool remain top while Sheffield drop down to 12th.

Aston Villa 2 vs. 2 Burnley

An entertaining game as both teams took it in turns to score their goals. El Ghazi opened the scoring for Villa in the 33rd minute and Villa held the lead until half way through the 2nd half. Jay Rodriguez then equalised for Burnley in the 68th minute, McGinn got Villa back ahead in the 79th minute and Chris Wood once again equalised in the 81st minute. A tough game as the point keeps Villa at 18th while Burnley drop down into 11th.

Bournemouth 2 vs. 2 West Ham

Another tight game which had goals with two coming in each half. Yarmolenko gave West Ham an early lead in the 10th minute but it was short lived as King equalised for Bournemouth in the 17th minute. Neither team broke the deadlock until the 2nd half when Callum Wilson scored in the 46th minute to give Bournemouth the lead. Cresswell though popped up in the 74th minute to seal a point for the Hammers. Bournemouth drop to 8th with the point while West Ham remain 5th with theirs.

Crystal Palace 2 vs. 0 Norwich

Palace are showing good home form as they beat Norwich who after beating City have lost sight of their targets at the moment. Milivojevic scored in the 21st minute via the penalty spot and Townsend added a late goal in the 92nd minute to put any comeback out of doubt. Palace move up to 9th with the win while Norwich drop down to 17th.

Tottenham 2 vs. 1 Southampton

A game which had a great first half but an eventless 2nd as Tottenham sealed an important win at home. Wolverhampton 2 vs. 0 Watford

Wolves climb all the way up into 13th with the win while Watford remain bottom of the table the only team not having won a game yet.

Everton 1 vs. 3 Man City

A good game of football but one with a routine result for City at the end. Everton had already done better than Watford as they kept City quiet for 24 minutes but Jesus gave City the lead at that moment. Everton replied strongly and Calvert Lewin headed in a goal in the 33rd minute after great work from Coleman. Everton kept City at bay for much of the 2nd half and had chances of their own but City’s quality came through as Mahrez scored a free kick in the 71st minute. Sterling then added a 3rd in the 84th minute to remove any hopes of a comeback. Everton fought well and there were many positives for Silva but their side drop down to 15th. City remain 2nd, 5 points behind Liverpool.

Leicester 5 vs. 0 Newcastle

Leicester are having one of those seasons where the rest struggle and they shine as they beat a lowly Newcastle 5-0. Pereira starting things off with a goal in the 16th minute but Newcastle kept them at bay as the scoreline stayed 1-0 until the 2nd half. Vardy then scored in the 54th minute, Dummett scored an own goal in the 57th minute, and Vardy scored again in the 64th minute to make it 4-0. Ndidi then popped up to score a 5th in the 90th minute as Newcastle fell apart in the 2nd half. Leicester remain 3rd in the table while Newcastle drop down into 19th.

Man United 1 vs. 1 Arsenal

A game that once used to be a clash of the table toppers but now is one which involves the top four hopefuls. United and Arsenal fielded injury or selection affected lineups in a game that only brought slumber to many fans until the final five minutes of the first half. McTominay scored in the 45th minute via a long range finish as he gave United a lead going into the 2nd half. Aubameyang then scored in the 58th minute with a good finish which was initially ruled offside only for VAR to change the decision as Aubameyang was miles onside. Neither team could go on and win the game as they settled for a point. United drop down into 10th while Arsenal remain a familiar 4th.
