Lille 1 vs. 2 Chelsea Champions League Group Stage MD 2 Review

A tough game but job done!

Lampard got his first win in Europe as we beat Lille 1-2 in France on Wednesday. Lampard selected a 3-4-3 lineup with Kepa starting in goal, and Azpilicueta, Zouma, and Tomori in defence. Alonso, and Reece James started as wing backs while Jorginho and Kante started in midfield. Mount, Tammy, and Willian started upfront. CHO, Michy, Christensen, Kovacic, Giroud, and Pedro were on the bench with Pulisic, and Barkley not in the squad. It was a decent lineup and the European debut of Reece James was great to see.

Chelsea got off to a good start with plenty of possession and got the breakthrough in the 22nd minute via Tammy Abraham who finished expertly after Tomori had picked him out. Osimhen though scored a header in the 33rd minute after Willian had been caught out leading to a counter attack which led to the corner. Chelsea’s zonal defending contributed to more problems as Lampard should really look at man marking. The game stayed tight until Lampard switched to a back four with Hudson-Odoi coming on for Reece James. Hudson-Odoi then provided the assist from a cross that Willian volleyed home for the winner.

Player wise the man of the match was Kepa as he made several key saves throughout the game and showed great composure at the back. The defence was relatively solid while Reece James made a solid debut. Alonso was good as well with Jorginho also playing well although Kante looked like he was coming back from injury as he lacked fitness. Mount had a good first half but dwindled as the game went on as it looks like he needs a rest while Tammy was decent throughout and did well to get a goal. Willian was Willian as in he ran around for much of the game lost the ball several times but got a goal which overshadowed his relatively poor performance. Pedro, Kovacic, and Hudson-Odoi were the substitutes with CHO especially making a difference when he came on.

Not the best of games but a solid performance overall, I would have liked to see Pulisic invovled but it seems like for one reason or the other he is not in Lampard’s plans right now. Hopefully he can start getting game time soon. 3 points in Europe 2nd in the group and next up is Southampton. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
