Southampton 1 vs. 4 Chelsea Review

A great way to head into the International break!

A 1-4 win at Southampton capped off a good period for Chelsea as we won 4 games in a row in all competitions and move up into 5th in the league 2 points behind 2nd placed City. Lampard selected his standard lineup with Kepa starting in goal, Alonso, Tomori, Zouma, and Azpilicueta made up the back four. Jorginho, Kante, and Mount made up the midfield with Mount in a better position. Hudson-Odoi started his first game in the league with Willian on the right and Tammy up front.

Southampton started off as the better side but Chelsea grew into the game and Tammy scored the opening goal in the 17th minute after lobbing Gunn. The ball was cleared off the line by Yoshida but goal line technology proved that the ball had crossed the line before the clearance. Chelsea began to pile the pressure as Mount scored next with some good play with Willian as he ran into the box and finished expertly in the 24th minute. Ings scored in 30th minute to get one back for Southampton as we lost another chance to keep a clean sheet. The goal was fairly sloppy with another lapse in defending as Yan Valery was able to cross from the left. Kante scored 5 mintues from half time with a shot from outside the box as he continues to impress from last season in the forward role.

The 2nd half was tighter as Chelsea looked to manage the game professionally while Southampton pushed for a win but also did not want to concede. Kepa made saves but nothing too serious as Lampard made subs around the 70th minute with Kovacic, Pulisic, and Michy coming on for Mount, Hudson-Odoi, and Tammy. Pulisic and Michy were looking to make an impact and impress and that is what they did as Pulisic provided a brilliant through ball assist for Michy who finished expertly.

Everyone mostly had a good game, Kepa was solid and not at fault for the goal while the defence worked well but Tomori had a slightly off game with some sloppy passes. Jorginho and Kante were at their normal best while Mount got a goal and dwindled as the game went on as he seems like needs a rest. Mount could also have scored one more goal but scuffed his shot. Hudson-Odoi was good as he warms up with more game time, he provided another assist and could have scored but finished poorly. Willian I have to put my hands up and say was the best player on the pitch yesterday as Lampard’s faith in him seems to be paying off. For me it looked like the Willian of old who runs all over the pitch and makes forward runs and passes brilliantly as well. If Willian continues like this I have no issues with him starting although I do think rotation is necessary. Tammy was solid again as develops game after game 9 goals now for the season with 8 in the league as he returns to the top of the goal scoring charts. Kovacic worked well when he came on and Pulisic did well to provide a brilliant assist while Michy’s finish was really good as well.

Lampard will have good problems going forward with so many players eager to play and showing good form and flashes of brilliance. The international break is not the best but hopefully everyone stays fit and Chelsea continue this form. We have another good period of games and could move up the table with the rest of the teams having tougher fixtures. A good game a good win and we move on! COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
