Weekend Football Review

I don’t like the International break!

Premier League MW 8

Brighton 3 vs. 0 Tottenham

Shock no 1 came to us from Brighton as the Seagulls dominated Pochettino’s Tottenham and scored 3 in the process. Maupay scored within 3 minutes although Lloris might have broken his arm in the process. Teenage debutant Connolly scored in the 32nd minute and then scored in the 65th minute to seal the game. Tottenham have now conceded 10 goals in the last two games as and sit 9th in the League. Pochettino has a lot of thinking to do as it seems that Spurs might have peaked and are now heading back to normalcy. Brighton climbed up to 14th with their first win since the opening weekend as Potter seems to be building something.

Burnley 1 vs. 0 Everton

Everton dominated the stats but Burnley won the game, after a event less 1st half Coleman got sent off for Everton in the 56th minute and Burnley took advantage. Hendrick scored in the 72nd minute as Burnley sealed a win. Burnley climb up into 7th with the win while Everton drop into the relegation zone at 18th. Marcos Silva is another manager who is under pressure to deliver results now as a painful 14 days await.

Liverpool 2 vs. 1 Leicester

Liverpool and Leicester was always going to be a tough game for the Reds and they almost dropped points but luck struck Klopp and his men again. Mane scored in the 40th minute as Liverpool went into half time with a lead. Leicester worked hard in the 2nd half and were the better team and it yielded results as Maddison scored in the 80th minute. Leicester seemed to have got a point but Mane in my opinion dived as contact was made in the penalty box and Milner converted a penalty in the 95th minute to make it 8/8 for Liverpool. Liverpool now open up an 8 point gap from City, they can’t lose now can they? Leicester drop one place into 4th but should have got a point.

Norwich 1 vs. 5 Aston Villa

The Champions of the Championship last season went up against the playoff Champions and Villa thrashed Norwich. Wesley scored in the 14th minute and then got another in the 30th minute. Grealish, Hourihane, and Luiz scored in the 2nd half as the Villians went 0-5 up. Drmic got a consolation goal late on but it was nothing more than that. Norwich have not been the same since they beat City although they have suffered several injuries and this International break will come as a relief to them. Norwich drop into the relegation zone as they sit 19th while Villa climb out into 15th.

Watford 0 vs. 0 Sheffield United

The only goalless game and draw of the weekend as neither team could break each other down and it was probably a better result for Watford. Watford remain bottom of the table though still seeking their first win of the season. Sheffield drop one place down into 13th but level on points with United and that is an accomplishment for the newly promoted side and Sheffield are playing better football.

West Ham 1 vs. 2 Crystal Palace

This London Derby turned up in the 2nd half after a tight first half as Haller scored in the 54th minute to give West Ham the lead. Van Aanholt then scored a penalty in the 63rd minute to equalise for the Eagles. Ayew then scored in the 87th minute to seal a brilliant period for Palace and Hodgson. West Ham drop down into 8th while Palace climb all the way up to 6th.

Arsenal 1 vs. 0 Bournemouth

Luiz scored in the 9th minute with his first goal for Arsenal and that was it from Arsenal’s point of view as it was enough to seal three points for the Gunners. Bournemouth piled pressure on Arsenal in the final 15 minutes and hit the post as well but Leno and co remained strong. Arsenal and Emery climb into 3rd a point behind City while Bournemouth drop down into 10th.

Man City 0 vs. 2 Wolverhampton

Shock no 2 came to us from Manchester as the reigning Champions City lost to Wolves as they regained their title of top 6 killers. Wolves played brilliantly throughout the game and it yielded results in the final 10 minutes as Traore scored 2 goals to seal the win. Wolves were solid and played on the counter as they seem to be slowly returning to form climbing up to 11th. City have already lost two and are now 8 points behind Liverpool and while it’s not the end of the world there is a lot of work to be done for Pep as he looks to sort out his defence.

Newcastle 1 vs. 0 Man United

Not really a shock as I predicted it but Newcastle beat Man United as Steve Bruce one his first game against the Red Devils in his 23rd attempt. Matty Longstaff Sean Longstaff’s younger brother scored the winning goal on his debut in the 72nd minute. Newcastle worked hard and deserved the win and the post match interview from the brothers is what football is all about. Newcastle climb out into 16th while United drop down into 12th and two points above the relegation zone.

La Liga MW 8

Real Madrid beat Granada 4-2 as Hazard got his first goal for his new club and the world was restored to normalcy. Atletico drew with Real Valladolid in a goalless draw, while Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 4-0 with Suarez, Vidal, Dembele, and Messi all scoring. Real Madrid go 2 points clear at the top while Barcelona, Atletico, and Granada make up the top four.

Serie MW 7

Milan beat Genoa 1-2 in a tight game with both teams getting red cards, Atalanta beat Lecce 3-1, Roma drew with Cagliari 1-1, Napoli drew with Torino 0-0, and Juventus beat Inter 1-2 as Conte lost his 1st game of the season and Sarri got one over the guy he succeeded at Chelsea. The game was brilliant and end to end as it looks like a rivalry could be reigniting in Italy. Juventus are now the only unbeaten team in the top 6 leagues in Europe as they move to the top of the table one point above Inter who drop down into 2nd. Atalanta and Napoli make up the top four while Milan climb up to 13th.

Bundesliga MW 7

Leipzig drew with Leverkusen 1-1, Dortmund drew with Freiburg 2-2, Bayern lost to Hoffenheim 1-2, Monchengladbach thrashed Augsburg 5-1, and Frankfurt drew with Werder Bremen 2-2. The Bundesliga is the best race at the moment with 6 points separating the top 10 and 2 separating the top 7. Monchengladbach lead the pack while Wolfsburg, Bayern, and Freiburg make up the top four.

Ligue MW 9

Amiens beat Marseille 3-1, PSG beat Angers 4-0, Nantes beat Nice 1-0, Montpellier beat Monaco 3-1 as Monaco’s good run came to an end. Lille drew with Nimes 2-2, Stade Reims beat Rennes 0-1, and St.Etienne beat Lyon 1-0. PSG lead the pack while Nantes, Angers and Bordeaux make up the top four.
