Time to continue that momentum!
Chelsea sit in 5th as we welcome 16th placed Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge. Newcastle come into this game having beaten Manchester United at home before the break to get only their 2nd win of the season. In the current climate it isn’t hard to beat United but it is an achievement none the less and one that will encourage the Magpies.
Chelsea are on a 4 game winning streak in all competitions and have a tough game against Ajax next week to also look forward too. The last win against Southampton was an exciting one that once again showed quality from the youth while the substitutions also showed form. Players like Tammy, Mount, Tomori and Barkley have been away during the international break for England while Hudson-Odoi scored two goals for the U-21’s. Giroud managed two in two while Michy also scored for Belgium, Jorginho was also involved in goal for Italy while Pulisic had a tough time with the United States.
One can expect Newcastle to play like they did against United especially now that they are away. Steve Bruce will setup defensively and play on the counter and Chelsea will have plenty of the ball. This season like most we have created the usual bucket load of chances but unlike the last few seasons we are converting those chances into goals especially in recent games. Lampard is looking for only his 2nd win at Stamford Bridge in the league.
Chelsea Team Preview
Kante once again picked up a slight injury while playing for France which prompted some frustration from Lampard towards Deschamps. Christensen also picked up an injury whilst playing for Denmark and could be out for 2 weeks while Rudiger is playing but won’t feature as he regains fitness. Emerson is back and Kovacic is back as well while Reece James is also fit. With Ajax during the week I feel that Lampard might make changes especially seeing as this is a home game against Newcastle. Kepa should start in goal, with Emerson, Tomori, Zouma, and Reece James in defence. Jorginho, Kovacic, and Mount in midfield with Hudson-Odoi, Tammy and Pulisic leading the line. This lineup is the one I prefer to see and should be a good one for players like Pulisic, CHO, and Reece James to gain more confidence from.
Newcastle United Preview
Ritchie, and Hayden are out for Newcastle but the rest are fit and available as a good international break and 14 days would have helped Steve Bruce in working with the squad. One can expect a similar lineup to the one against United with a slightly more defensive approach. Expect the Longstaff brothers to make up the midfield again as they hope to get another positive game. Willems has been causing problems up front from his position on right flank while Maximin, Almiron, and Joelinton have all showed moments of good play. The bench also has one Andy Carroll if an alternative is needed.
Starting XI Prediction
With other teams around us having relatively tougher fixtures on paper it is a good opportunity for Chelsea to climb into the top four. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
