Weekend Football Review

Late winners and plenty of shocks!

Premier League MW 11

Bournemouth 1 vs. 0 Man United

This was not one of the shocks because many expected that United would lose to Bournemouth. If United played the top 6 week in week out then they would be in the top 6 but there are 14 other teams and United are poor against them. Josh King scored in the 45th minute as a goal was enough to see Bournemouth get three points. Bournemouth climb up to 7th in the table while United drop down to 10th.

Arsenal 1 vs. 1 Wolverhampton

This was not a shock either as Arsenal continued their form of drawing games by sharing points with Wolves although it is a good point for the gunners. Aubameyang scored in the 21st minute via a rapid counter attack but Jimenez scored in the 76th minute to share the spoils. Arsenal are still 5th but now 6 points behind 4th while Wolves remain 12th.

Aston Villa 1 vs. 2 Liverpool

Villa took a surprise lead in this game as Trezeguet scored his first goal for the Villians in the 21st minute. It was all going so well for Villa and they stayed strong up till the 87th minute but Robertson equalised for Liverpool via a good header. Mane then scored in the 94th minute to seal the comeback for Liverpool and maintain their unbeaten run. To say that Liverpool have luck on their side would be an understatement while VAR was also shambolic. Villa drop to 16th with the loss while Liverpool remain top of the table.

Brighton 2 vs. 0 Norwich

Brighton continue their good form at home while Norwich continue to lose form since their win against City as Trossard and Duffy scored in the 2nd half to seal three points for the Seagulls. Brighton climb all the way up to 8th with the win while Norwich remain 19th and 4 points off of safety.

Man City 2 vs. 1 Southampton

Man City seem to have been thinking that what Liverpool can do we can do as well because it was another late comeback win. Ward-Prowse gave Southampton the lead in the 13th minute and the Saints held on for much of the game. Aguero then scored in the 70th minute to equalise and Walker scored in the 86th minute to seal the win. City play Liverpool next and a loss would have meant a potential 12 point gap if Liverpool won next weekend but this win means that City can cut it down to 3. Southampton remain 18th with the loss.

Sheffield United 3 vs. 0 Burnley

Sheffield go from strength to strength as they got a convincing win against Burnley. All the goals came in the first half as Lundstram scored two while Fleck scored right before half time. Sheffield now move up to 6th eyeing that Europa League spot while Burnley drop into 14th with their 3rd loss in a row.

West Ham 2 vs. 3 Newcastle

Newcastle managed the three points thanks to an early onslaught of goals. Clark and Fernandez scored in the 1st half and Shelvey added one in the 2nd to give the Magpies a comfortable 0-3 lead. Balbuena then scored in the 73rd minute and Snodgrass in the 90th to make it a nervy ending. West Ham make it 5 games without any wins as they drop down to 13th while Newcastle climb up to 15th.

Crystal Palace 0 vs. 2 Leicester

After a tough 1st half Leicester won the game in the 2nd thanks to goals from Soyuncu, and Vardy. It was a top 6 clash which now sees Palace drop to 9th while Leicester move back into 3rd after Chelsea had played on Saturday.

Everton 1 vs. 1 Tottenham

A tight 1st half saw all hell break lose in the 2nd with VAR going crazy, Dele Alli giving Spurs the lead in the 63rd minute, and then the sad injury to Andre Gomes who collided with Aurier which led to his ankle breaking. Tosun though grabbed a goal in the 97th minute which got a deserved point for the Toffees. Son was also wrongly sent off as the referee reacted to the foul he had made prior to the Gomes injury. VAR would have shown that it was not Son’s tackle that injured Gomes. Everton drop down into 17th while Tottenham remain 11th.

A short note on VAR – It is important that VAR functions properly because it is a good addition to football when it works. In it’s current form though VAR is just causing more problems than solutions. This weekend saw a slew of wrong decisions made by VAR and the lack of a screen at the side of the pitch which the on field referee could consult was evident. The FA need to look at Serie A or other sports like Rugby, and Cricket to see how to better implement this technology.

La Liga MW 12

A shocking weekend in La Liga as Barcelona lost to Levante 3-1, Atletico drew with Sevilla 1-1, and Real drew with Betis 0-0. The biggest surprise was the Barcelona loss as Sevilla and Real Betis are good teams and especially with Atletico and Real not really at their normal levels. Barcelona still lead but are now level on points with Real Madrid and Real Sociedad while Atletico are 4th.

Serie MW 11

Roma beat Napoli 2-1, Inter beat Bologna 1-2, Juventus beat Torino 0-1, Cagliari beat Atalanta 0-2, and Lazio beat Milan 1-2. Routine wins for the top teams as Juventus lead the table with a 1 point gap with Inter, Roma, and Lazio making up the top four. Milan squander in 11th as it looks like another disappointing season for the legendary team.

Bundesliga MW 10

Monchengladbach beat Leverkusen 1-2, Frankfurt thrashed Bayern 5-1 after Boateng had been sent off early on, Leipzig thrashed Mainz 8-0, and Dortmund beat Wolfsburg 3-0. Big wins and big losses in Germany this weekend as Monchengladbach open a 3 point lead at the top of the table with Dortmund, Leipzig, and Bayern making up the top four. The Bundesliga is still the most entertaining at the moment as 2 points separate 2nd from 9th.

Ligue MW 12

Dijon beat PSG 2-1, Marseille beat Lille 2-1, Lyon beat Toulouse 2-3, and St.Etienne beat Monaco 1-0. PSG lost to Dijon in a shocking defeat but saw their lead remain intact as they still remain 7 points clear of the rest. Angers, Nantes, and Marseille make up the top four. Monaco are 15th.
