Champions League Group Stage MD 4 Review

Glorious comebacks and routine wins!

Group A

Paris Saint Germain 1 vs. 0 Club Brugge

PSG made it 4 wins in 4 thanks to a goal from Mauro Icardi in the 1st half. Brugge sit 3rd in the table with two points and are likely going to fight it out with Galatasaray for a Europa League place. PSG with 12 points should finish first now that they have qualified for the knockout stages. 

Real Madrid 6 vs. 0 Galatasaray

Real Madrid got back to winning ways with a big win against Turkish champions Galatasaray at the Bernabeu. Rodrygo scored two in the opening 10 minutes while Ramos and Benzema added two more goals in the 1st half. Benzema and scored in the 81st minute and Rodrygo completed his hattrick before the final whistle to make it a 5 point gap in 2nd. Real Madrid have all but qualified for the knockout stages while Galatasaray sit 4th with 1 point and now look to finish 3rd. 

Group B

Red Star Belgrade 0 vs. 4 Tottenham

Lo Celso got his first goal for Spurs in the 1st half while Son added a double in the 2nd along with a 4th goal from Eriksen late on. Tottenham had a tough trip and came out with a good performance and Son will feel good having scored and putting the Gomes injury behind him. Tottenham are 4 points ahead of Red Star but still not guaranteed a place in the knockout stages as they sit 2nd. Red Star at the moment look like they will drop into the Europa League. 

Bayern Munich 2 vs. 0 Olympiacos

Lewandowski, and Perisic scored late in the 2nd half after a tough 1st half to make it 4 wins out of 4 for the managerless Germans and seal a place in the knockout stages. Olympiacos are bottom with 1 point and face a fight to make the Europa League at this stage. 

Group C

Atalanta 1 vs. 1 Man City

Sterling got things rolling for City in the 7th minute as it looked like it would be a routine win for the English champions but Atalanta held on. Pasalic then scored in the 49th minute to equalise while Jesus missed a penalty as well. Ederson was injured during the game and Bravo was sent off in the final 10 minutes of the game meaning that Walker was sent into goal. City miss out on guaranteeing a place in the knockout stages but should get there eventually. Atalanta finally manage a point but sit bottom and 4 points behind 3rd. 

Dinamo Zagreb 3 vs. 3 Shakhtar Donetsk

Patrick gave Shakhtar the lead in the 13th minute but Petkovic equalised for Zagreb in the 25th minute. Marlos and Moro were sent off in the 2nd half with both teams down to 10 men. The game then lit up in the final 10 minutes as Dinamo scored in the 83rd and 89th minute via Ivanusec, and Ademi. There were 8 minutes of extra time though as Moraes, and Tete scored in that time to get the Ukranians a point. Shakhter remain 2nd on goal difference but Dinamo are right behind them as the fight for 2nd continues. 

Group D

Bayer Leverkusen 2 vs. 1 Atletico Madrid

Partey gave Leverkusen a lead right before half time as he scored an own goal. Volland scored in the 55th minute to double the lead as Amiri was sent off late on for Bayer. Morata then scored in the 94th minute for Atletico but it was too little too late. Atletico remain 2nd with 7 points 4 points ahead of Lokomotiv. Leverkusen manage their first points as the remain 4th but now level with Lokomotiv who are 3rd. Progression for all teams is still mathematically possible. 

Lokomotiv Moskva 1 vs. 2 Juventus

Ramsey scored in the 3rd minute to give Juventus the lead but Miranchuk scored in the 12th minute to equalise for Lokomotiv. Douglas Costa then finally managed the 3 points for Juventus in the 93rd minute. Juventus seal progression to the knockout stages but are not yet guaranteed top spot. 

Group E

Liverpool 2 vs. 1 Genk

Wijnaldum gave Liverpool the lead in the 14th minute but Samatta scored in the 40th minute to sent both teams in level at half time. Chamberlain though continued his good form by scoring in the 53rd minute and getting Liverpool all three points. Liverpool sit top with 9 points but are still not guaranteed progression although its basically done. Genk sit bottom of the group but could still make the Europa League. 

Napoli 1 vs. 1 Red Bull Salzburg

Haland scored an 11th minute penalty to give Salzburg the lead as the youngster continued to impress Europe. Lozano scored right before half time to bring Napoli back into the game. Neither team could break the deadlock in the 2nd half as they shared the points. Napoli are 2nd with 8 points while Salzburg are 3rd with 4 as both teams can still mathematically move around. 

Group F

Barcelona 0 vs. 0 Slavia Praha

Barcelona continue their dubious form as they were held to a goalless draw by Slavia at home. Valverde is a manager under pressure as Barcelona miss out on sealing progression to the next round. Slavia have 2 points and still have a chance at the Europa League. 

Borussia Dortmund 3 vs. 2 Inter Milan

Inter took a two goal lead in the 1st half as Martinez and Vecino scored. The 2nd half though brought out a different Dortmund as Hakimi scored in the 51st minute and Brandt scored in the 64th minute to bring the score back level. Hakimi then scored the winner for Dortmund in the 77th minute to move Dortmund into 2nd and drop Inter into 3rd and 3 points behind the Germans. 

Group G

Zenit 0 vs. 2 Red Bull Leipzig

Demme and Sabitzer scored in either half to seal a good win for Leipzig. Leipzig remain top of the group with 9 points and have almost sealed progression while Zenit are 3rd with 4 points but can still qualify.

Olympique Lyon 3 vs. 1 Benfica

Andersen and Depay scored in the 1st half to give Lyon a comfortable lead. Seferovic scored in the 76th minute to give Benfica some hope but Traore got a 3rd goal right before full time. Lyon move into 2nd with the win 3 points ahead of Zenit who are 3rd. Benfica are bottom of the table but are only a point behind Zenit. 

Group H

Valencia 4 vs. 1 Lille

Osimhen scored for Lille in the 25th minute and it looked like they would seal a 1st win but Valencia had other plans in mind. Parejo scored via a penalty in the 66th minute, while Soumaoro scored an own goal in the 82nd minute to give Valencia the lead. Kondogbia then scored 2 minutes later to make it 3 and Torres scored in the 90th minute to seal a massive comeback. Valencia remain 3rd in the group but level on points with Chelsea and Ajax as they all have 7 points. Lille can still mathematically reach the Europa League but they would need a miracle as they sit bottom of the table with 1 point.
