Chelsea 2 vs. 1 Aston Villa Review

Back to winning ways!

Chelsea got back on track as we beat Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge by 2 goals to 1 thanks to our academy players. Lampard made 5 changes from the game against West Ham as Kepa started in goal, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Christensen, and James in defence, Kovacic, and Kante in midfield with Pulisic, Mount, and Willian playing behind Tammy. The stage was set for an eventful evening with Cahill on Amazon duty and Terry returning to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea dominated the initial minutes in the 1st half as we started with more aggression than the game against West Ham. The goal though did not come until the 24th minute as Willian played the ball into Reece James who crossed it to Tammy who found himself open for a headed finish. Back in the lineup and back on the score sheet as Tammy took his tally to 11 goals. The game became more open as the half went on as Villa started to add pressure and Trezeguet got a goal in the 41st minute for Villa as he bundled in a cross after some poor marking by Reece James. 1-1 at half time as Chelsea needed to start the 2nd half better than the way they ended the 1st.

The 2nd half saw a reinvigorated Chelsea team come out as we dominated Villa. The early pressure resulted in an early goal as Willian crossed the ball into Tammy who chested the ball down for Mount who brilliantly volleyed the ball into the net. Mount back with the goals which will do him a world of confidence as Chelsea continued their pressure. Chelsea went on to have 15 or 16 shots at goal in the first half and a combination of Heaten saves and last ditch defending by Mings made it a tighter affair. Kepa made a couple of good saves towards the end as Chelsea saw out the game.

Player wise Kepa was good as he looks to be regaining his confidence. Azpilicueta was good but it is clear we need a more holistic left back. Christensen and Zouma were better as a pair than the Valencia game while Reece James did not have his best game but got an assist and was still decent. Kovacic was the best player on the pitch as he ran around the midfield making tackles dribbling and being a constant threat in Villa’s side. Kante was good and his combination with Kovacic was interesting. Mount played well after a shaky start and will take confidence from his goal. Pulisic was a constant threat again and his close control was exquisite once again. The American made several runs but was not found and might feel slightly unfortunate not to have a goal. Willian started poorly but had a good 2nd half as he was the best Willian he can be. Tammy returned from an injury and got a goal and should have had a ton more while he came off with a slight knock on his knee. The subs were made late in the game as Jorginho, Hudson-Odoi, and Michy came on for Willian, Pulisic, and Tammy.

Chelsea maintain a 6 point gap between 4th and 5th as we return to winning ways after two losses. Lampard and the team deserved the win but if we are more clinical we can score so many goals because we create so many chances. Next up is Everton who are in pickle with Marcos Silva. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
