Champions League Group Stage MD 6 Preview

The final matchday!

Group A

Club Brugge vs. Real Madrid

Real Madrid go into this game already having made the round of 16 and a win wont take them up to 1st. Brugge are 3rd at the moment a point ahead of Galatasaray and need to win to keep the Europa League spot in their own hands. Anything less than a win for Brugge would mean Galatasaray would have to lose for Brugge to make the Europa League. Brugge have won all three of their games since MD 5 while Real have won both their games as well. Brugge are a tough side to crack and will have more to fight for in this game.

Paris Saint Germain vs. Galatasaray

PSG have already sealed progression and top spot in the group stage as they can rest players and relax going into this game. Galatasaray are bottom of the group and need to win and hope Brugge drop points if they want to make the Europa League. PSG have won both their games since MD 5 while Galatasaray have drawn 1 lost 1 and won 1 since. A rested PSG are still a tough side to beat and Galatasaray have not been in the best form.

Group B

Olympiacos vs. Red Star Belgrade

The fight for the Europa League spot as the winner would head into the competition. Olympiacos have drawn 1 and won 1 since MD 5 while Red Star have won all three of their games since. Red Star have a 2 point lead over Olympiacos and a win or a draw would be enough for them, Olympiacos have to win. Red Star are the team in better form but an away game is always tricky as the home crowd will be up for it.

Bayern Munich vs. Tottenham

Bayern and Tottenham have already sealed their spots in the round of 16 and also their positions in the group as Bayern have a 5 point lead. It is a good opportunity for both teams to rest players and so it should be a game of pride more than anything else. Bayern have lost both their games since MD 5 while Spurs have won 2 and lost 1. Mourinho will love to beat Bayern and this should just be an interesting game with no stakes.

Group C

Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Atalanta

Its all open for these teams in Group C. Shakhtar are currently 2nd with 6 points while Atalanta are 4th with 4 points in between is Dinamo with 5 points. Shakhtar can make the round of 16 if they beat Atalanta and Dinamo lose to Man City while a draw would also be enough for them if Dinamo lost. Atalanta can make the round of 16 if they beat Shakhtar and Dinamo lose or draw against City that would see Shakhtar drop into the Europa League, but if Dinamo win then Shakhtar would drop out of Europe and Atalanta would make the Europa League. Shakhtar have drawn 1 and won 1 since MD 5 while Atalanta have won both their games. An interesting game with multiple factors at play.

Dinamo Zagreb vs. Man City

Dinamo sit 3rd as they entertain City who have already reached the round of 16 and sealed top spot. Dinamo need to win and hope Shakhtar drop points if they want to make the round of 16 while anything else would see them finish in the Europa League or worse depending on results elsewhere. Dinamo have won both their games since MD 5 while City have drawn 1 won 1 and lost 1. City are in patchy form and Pep might rest his players for this game and so Dinamo can have a great chance of making the next round if results go their way.

Group D

Atletico Madrid vs. Lokomotiv Moskva

Atletico go into this game in 2nd place and win would keep them there and send them to the round of 16. A draw or loss would also work depending on what happens with Leverkusen in their game. Lokomotiv can aim for a Europa League place if they beat Atletico but Leverkusen would have to lose and there would have to be a swing in goal difference for that top happen. Atletico have lost 1 and drawn 1 since MD 5 while Lokomotiv have lost 1. The two teams are not in great form but Atletico need to win.

Bayer Leverkusen vs. Juventus

Leverkusen sit in 3rd and a win would see them make the Round of 16 is Atletico dropped points. A Europa League spot is pretty much guaranteed unless the Germans lose heavily to Juventus and Lokomotiv beat Atletico by a big margin. Juventus have already sealed top spot as they go into this game having drawn 1 and lost 1 in Serie A while Bayer have won both their games. Juventus are going through a rough patch at the moment and a win would be enough to guarantee them a place in the Europa League and more if results elsewhere go their way.

Group E

Red Bull Salzburg vs. Liverpool

Everything to play for in Group E as no team is guaranteed progression yet. Red Bull sit 3rd and are guaranteed a place in the Europa League at least if they lose. A win would see them move ahead of Liverpool into the top spot of the group while a draw would keep them in the Europa League. Liverpool are pretty much guaranteed a top spot unless they lose and Napoli win which would see them move into 3rd and move to the Europa League. A win would see them make the round of 16. A must win game for both teams which makes this one a must watch. Liverpool have been great in the league but choppy in Europe and a drop into the Europa League would be enormously entertaining. Red Bull have won 1 and drawn 1 while Liverpool have won all three since MD 5.

Napoli vs. Genk

Napoli go into this game in 2nd two points clear of Red Bull. Napoli need to win to see them reach the round of 16 while dropped points would move the situation out of their hands. Genk are basically playing for pride as they are heading out of Europe regardless of results. Napoli have lost 1 and drawn 1 since MD 5 while Genk have lost 2 and won 1. The teams are in poor form domestically but Napoli should win this game.

Group F

Borussia Dortmund vs. Slavia Praha

Dortmund are 3rd and heading for the Europa League even with a loss in this game but a win would take them to the round of 16 if Inter dropped points. Slavia are just playing for pride. Dortmund have won both their games since MD 5 while Slavia have also won both their games. Dortmund need to win but thats all they can do as the rest is in Barcelona’s hands.

Inter Milan vs. Barcelona

Inter sit in 2nd but only on goal difference as they need to win this game to reach the round of 16. Dropped points would only work if Dortmund also drop points. Barcelona have sealed top spot in the group regardless of the result and so will be heading to the round of 16. Inter have won 1 and drawn 1 since MD 5 while Barcelona have won both their games. Barcelona should rest players for this game as all the pressure is Conte and Inter to win this game.

Group G

Olympique Lyon vs. Red Bull Leipzig

Lyon have to win this game and hope Zenit drop points if they want reach the round of 16 for certain. A loss would not be enough and could see them drop out of Europe entirely but a point would guarantee them the round of 16 or Europa if Zenit lost. Red Bull sit top and should make the round of 16 but if Lyon win heavily and Zenit also win then Leipzig could drop into Europa. Lyon have won 2 and lost 1 since MD 5 while Leipzig have won both their games. Leipzig are the team in better form but both teams are going to be looking for the win.

Benfica vs. Zenit

Benfica sit last but can make the round of 16 if they win heavily and Lyon also lose heavily. A win would also see them make Europa but it would need to be a big one. Zenit are 2nd and need to win to stay in the Champions League, dropped points would move the situation out of their hands. Benfica have won 2 and drawn 1 since MD 5 while Zenit have won 1. A tough game with both teams needing the win.

Group H

Ajax vs. Valencia

Ajax sit top of the table with a 2 point lead and a win would see them reach the round of 16. A loss could see them drop into the Europa League if Chelsea won their game while a draw would be enough to make the round of 16 as well. Valencia need to win to reach the next round while a draw would be enough if Chelsea lost. Ajax have won both their games since MD 5 while Valencia have done the same winning 2 as well. A close game with both teams searching for the win.
