The toughest top 16 set!
Club Brugge 1 vs. 3 Real Madrid
No real stakes for Real but Brugge were looking to remain in the Europa League and they managed that with the loss. A cagey 1st half saw all the goals come in the 2nd as Rodrygo scored for Real in the 53rd minute. Vanaken equalised for Brugge in the 55th minute but Vincius restored Real’s lead 10 minutes later. Modric then scored in the 91st minute to seal the deal. Brugge finish 3rd in the table and drop down to the Europa League while Real finish 2nd.
Paris Saint Germain 5 vs. 0 Galatasaray
Icardi, Sarabia, Neymar, Mbappe, and Cavani all scored for PSG as Galatasaray were sent crashing out of Europe. The Turks need to draw or win this game but were far from their target. PSG finish 1st in the group heading into the round of 16.
Olympiacos 1 vs. 0 Red Star Belgrade
Olympiacos totally dominated Red Star but won by a goal as El-Arabi scored a 87th minute penalty for Olympiacos to leap frog Red Star into 3rd and head into the Europa League. Red Star drop down to 4th and out of Europe.
Bayern Munich 3 vs. 1 Tottenham
No real stakes in this fixture as Mourinho fielded a rested team in Munich. Coman gave Bayern the lead in the 14th minute before Sessegnon equalised in the 20th minute. Muller restored Bayern’s lead right before half time and Coutinho scored in the 64th minute to give Bayern a comfortable win. Bayern finish the group having won all their games as they head to the round of 16 along with Tottenham who finish 2nd.
Shakhtar Donetsk 0 vs. 3 Atalanta
Atalanta had to win this game as they sat 4th in the group and hope that Dinamo lost and that is what happened as their recent form leapfrogged them into 2nd and the round of 16. A 2nd half onslaught saw goals from Castagne, Pasalic, and Gosens as Shakhtar had no reply. Atalanta finish 2nd in the group with Shakhtar heading to the Europa League.
Dinamo Zagreb 1 vs. 4 Man City
Olmo scored for Dinamo in a must win game but Jesus equalised in the 34th minute for City. Jesus then scored two more goals in the 50th and 54th minute to complete his hattrick. Foden scored a 4th in the 84th minute to seal the win and top spot for City. Dinamo crash out of Europe entirely.
Atletico Madrid 2 vs. 0 Lokomotiv Moscow
Atletico had to beat Lokomotiv to make the round of 16 as Felix scored a penalty in the 17th minute and Felipe scored in the 54th minute to seal the win. Atletico finish the group in 2nd and make it to the next round. Lokomotiv drop out of Europe entirely.
Bayer Leverkusen 0 vs. 2 Juventus
Bayer had to win this game but they could not as Ronaldo and Higuain scored in the final 15 minutes of the game to seal a win for the Italians as they confirmed top spot. Bayer drop into 3rd and the Europa League.
Red Bull Salzburg 0 vs. 2 Liverpool
Salzburg played well against Liverpool for 45 minutes but 2 poor minutes in the 2nd half sent them crashing to the Europa League. Keita scored in the 57th minute and Salah scored a brilliant goal in the 58th minute. Red Bull drop into Europa while Liverpool finish top of the group.
Napoli 4 vs. 0 Genk
Milik scored a 1st half hattrick while Mertens added a 74th minute penalty to seal comfortable win and 2nd place in the group. Ancelotti guided the Neoplitans to the round of 16 and was sacked shortly after as a troubled domestic campaign overshadowed the result.
Borussia Dortmund 2 vs. 1 Slavia Praha
Sancho scored in the 10th minute as it looked like Dortmund would be heading to the round of 16 but Slavia scored in the 43rd minute via Soucek to temporarily send Inter into the next round. Brandt though scored in the 61st minute as Dortmund sealed progression into the next round in 2nd while Inter dropped into the Europa League. Slavia valiantly dropped out of Europe.
Inter Milan 1 vs. 2 Barcelona
Perez scored in the 23rd minute as Inter were heading for the Europa League. Lukaku equalised for Inter right before half time and for sometime they were heading into the round of 16. Dortmund then scored in their game and Inter now had to win this game but Fati then scored to become the youngest ever goalscorer in the Champions League in the final minutes of the game as Inter were sent into the Europa League. Barcelona finished top of the group.
Olympique Lyon 2 vs. 2 Red Bull Leipzig
Forsberg and Werner scored in the first half for Leipzig as Lyon were heading for the Europa League. Aouar and Depay scored in the 2nd half for Lyon though as they managed a point and stayed 2nd as the sealed progression into the next round. Leipzig finished top of the group.
Benfica 3 vs. 0 Zenit
Benfica had to win to reach the Europa League as they beat Zenit convincingly who then finished 4th on goal difference. Cervi and Pizzi scored in the 2nd half and Azmoun scored an own goal as Benfica completed the win. Benfica just about managed to squeeze into the Europa League but Lyon’s point meant that they could not finish any further.
Ajax 0 vs. 1 Valencia
Rodrigo scored in the 24th minute and Valencia held on to the goal as they miraculously finished top of the group and sent Ajax crashing into the Europa League. Chelsea also won their game meaning that Ajax finished with 10 points a point behind Valencia and Chelsea. Ajax now drop into Europa with Valencia finishing top of the group thanks to Remy’s goal in the Chelsea game.
