Big Big Game!
4th placed Chelsea take on 5th placed Tottenham in what is the game of the weekend. Tottenham are 3 points behind Chelsea and a win would see them go into 4th on goal difference while Chelsea are looking to bounce back after yet another loss last weekend which made it 4 losses out of 5 games. Mourinho is the new manager at Tottenham and he’s been there a little over a month. Tottenham endured a tough start to the season under Pochettino and by game week 12 Tottenham were 14th, 12 points behind Chelsea who were still 4th and having won only 3 of their 12 games. Mourinho was brought in the next morning and the lift was instant as in game week 13 Spurs went to West Ham and won 2-3. Mourinho has won 4 out of the 5 games since as he has picked up 12 points beating the likes of Bournemouth, Burnley, and Wolves while losing to United at Old Trafford. Chelsea have since won only 1 game out of 4 and so both teams are at opposite ends of the form chart. What Mourinho has expertly done is he has tightened up the defence to a certain extent and has boosted player morale with the likes of Alli excelling once again and Toby signing a new contract after having stalled for so long. It still is the customary 4-2-3-1 but Spurs in Mourinho have an experienced manager who has won everything and that aura has given players a bounce along with the fans.
Since Mourinho’s appointment Chelsea lost to City 2-1 where we played well, lost to West Ham 0-1 at the Bridge in an abysmal performance, beat Villa 2-1, lost to Everton 3-1 in Ferguson’s first game and then lost to Bournemouth 0-1 in another poor performance. It’s not like we are being swatted aside but our form has seen us reach a point where are cushion has disappeared and we need to win this game to keep us afloat the Europa League positions. It seems that the younger players are getting to grips with their first season in this sort of pressure but that is no excuse to lost to West Ham, Everton, and Bournemouth.
Chelsea Team Preview
Chelsea now only have Ruben Loftus-Cheek out through injury but he has been recovering well and has returned to the pitch as he looks to finally return to games by the end of Jan. Tomori is back which should be a boost as he should slot in next to Rudiger or Zouma with either one being given a rest, I have a feeling it might be Rudiger. Azpilicueta should move to left back for this game with Reece James starting at right back while Jorginho, Kovacic, and Kante should start in midfield. Pulisic and Hudson-Odoi should be our wingers while Tammy should start up front.
Tottenham Team Preview
Mourinho does not love to rotate and he should field the same team that beat Wolves last weekend. Kane and Son are the danger men as usual but Alli has always been a thorn in Chelsea games and Moura has picked up some form in recent weeks. Dier and Sissoko should make it an interesting midfield battle while the defence still has mistakes in them that can be taken advantage of. Mourinho will want to win at all costs especially after criticising Lampard’s tactics while doing Punditry.
Starting XI Prediction
This game is always heated and the added factor of Lampard vs Mourinho adds even more heat. The Chelsea fans should be shouting the teams name from minute 1 to the end and away fans usually do, the players need to be up for it and win this game because it would be a great way to pick up some moral. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
