Chelsea returned to winning ways in great fashion as we beat Tottenham 0-2 at the new White Hart Lane to keep our spot in the top four. The pressure was on Lampard and the team to bounce back and we certainly did. Lampard shocked everyone with switching to a 3-4-3 formation for this game as Mourinho was also stumped. Kepa started in goal, Tomori, Zouma, and Rudiger were our centre backs, Alonso, and Azpilicueta our wing backs, with Kovacic, and Kante making up the midfield. Willian and Mount played behind Tammy. I was one of the people who was skeptical at first and felt that this might play into Mourinho’s hands but I was wrong and thank Lampard for that.
From the first minute Chelsea looked the more comfortable side as we filled up the midfield and Alonso and Azpilicueta were given ample amounts of space to move forward. Vertonghen and Aurier did not know what to do and our back three had Son and Kane in their pocket. The first goal came in the 12th minute as Willian took a quick corner by passing to Kovacic who passed it back to Willian who dribbled past Aurier to curl it past Gazzaniga for a brilliant goal. Aurier was slow to react to the corner and so afforded Willian plenty of space. Willian was a constant threat throughout the game and really showed why he hates Tottenham. Chelsea continued to dominate the game and the 2nd goal came right before half time. Alonso was sent through on goal and Gazzaniga came out to clear the ball only for him to miss it completely and wipe out Alonso. The initial decision was a free kick in Spurs favor but everyone knew it was a penalty and VAR did as well and so Willian stepped up and made it 0-2.
Mourinho brought on Eriksen for the 2nd half and switched to 3 at the back as well a Spurs had a few chances initially. Any momentum though was removed in the 62nd minute as Rudiger and Son collided with each other and Son was given a free kick. VAR though had a look and it was evident that Son had intentionally made a kicking attempt at Rudiger although it had not connected. Rudiger made the most of it and it is the intent that is carded and so Son was sent off for the 2nd time this season. Spurs down to 10 men and Chelsea were just happy to play out the game. Tammy came off as he was exhausted as Michy came on and Azpi also ran his course with a slight hamstring problem and Reece James replaced him. Kante had a chance late on to make it 0-3 but was clearly tired and made the wrong decision at the end.
Mourinho livid at the final whistle Lampard delirious in front of the away fans and Chelsea 6 clear of Spurs as we sit in 4th going into Christmas. Player wise Kepa was didn’t have much to do but it was a clean sheet and boost of confidence from him. Rudiger, Tomori, and Zouma were beasts at the back as they nullified Harry Kane for 90 minutes. Azpilicueta had a good game and Alonso once again performed well from the wing back position. Kovacic and Kante were superb as usual. Mount played well as he was closer to Tammy as he defended well and created well at the same time, one of his better games as continues to develop this season. Tammy might not have had a goal but his build up play was great and he showed qualities that we lack from our other centre forwards. The man of the match though was Willian and for this game at least he was superb. Great touches, great movement, great goal, and he drove the team forward with energy as he made the no 10 proud and even Hazard chipped in with praise on Instagram. The main frustration with Willian is that he doesn’t show this form consistently but yesterday he had a masterclass.
So, Chelsea become the first team to beat an opposing team 3 times in 3 different away stadiums as we maintain our course for a top four finish. This was a massive game and the players showed great fight to win it. The key now is to continue the momentum as our run of games is favourable and we could create an even bigger gap. Next up Southampton at home on boxing day. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
