Midweek Football Review

Liverpool run further away.

Tottenham 2 vs. 1 Brighton

Tottenham started poorly as Webster gave Brighton the lead in the 37th minute. The 2nd half though saw goals from Kane and Alli as Mourinho bounced back from the loss to Chelsea with a win. Tottenham move into 6th 3 points behind Chelsea while Brighton drop down into 15th.

Aston Villa 1 vs. 0 Norwich

Hourihane scored the only goal of the game in the 2nd half as Aston Villa ended their losing run with an important win. Norwich were once again unlucky to not leave the game with a point or more as they had several chances. Villa remain 18th a point behind West Ham  while Norwich move to the bottom and now 7 points from safety.

Bournemouth 1 vs. 1 Arsenal

Gosling gave Bournemouth a lead in the 35th minute as it looked like it was same old same old under Arteta. Aubameyang equalised in the 2nd half though and Arsenal played well and should have probably left with all three points. An improved performance away from home for the Gunners as they remain 11th while Bournemouth drop down into 16th.

Crystal Palace 2 vs. 1 West Ham

All the action came in the 2nd half as Snodgrass gave West Ham the lead in the 57th minute. Kouyate equalised in the 68th minute though and Ayew scored a 90th minute winner for the Eagles. Palace climb up to 9th in the table while West Ham drop down into 17th and one point above the relegation zone.

Everton 1 vs. 0 Burnley

Calvert-Lewin got the only goal of the game in the 80th minute as Everton got off to a winning start under Ancelotti. The win takes Everton up to 13th while Burnley drop down to 12th with the loss after a run of decent wins.

Sheffield United 1 vs. 1 Watford

Deulofeu gave Watford a lead in the 27th minute but it was short lived as Norwood scored from the spot 9 minutes later to equalised for the Blades. Neither team could take further advantage from the game. Sheffield drop down to 7th with the point while Watford move into 19th now 6 points from safety.

Man United 4 vs. 1 Newcastle

Newcastle made several defensive mistakes as United’s pacy attack took advantage and got a big win at Old Trafford. Matty Longstaff gave Newcastle the lead in the 17th minute but United soon equalised through Martial. Greenwood and Rashford added 2 more before half time and Martial added a 4th and his 2nd in the 51st minute. United remain 8th with the win while Newcastle drop down to 10th.

Leicester 0 vs. 4 Liverpool

Firmino scored in the 31st minute to give Liverpool the lead as the leaders dominated the game. 10 crazy minutes in the 2nd half from the 70th to the 80th minute saw Liverpool add three more with Milner, Firmino, and Trent all scoring. Leicester had no reply as they yet again lost to another top 6 side to cap off a poor week. Leicester remain 2nd but now 13 points behind Liverpool who have a game in hand.

Wolverhampton 3 vs. 2 Man City

Wolves completed an insane comeback as they defeated City and made sure any hope that Pep had of retaining the title was extinguished. Ederson was sent off in the 12th minute after knocking Jota down who was clear through on goal. Sterling though gave City the lead in the 25th minute after his penalty had to be taken twice and was saved both times but scored on the rebound the 2nd time. Sterling then doubled the lead in the 50th minute. Traore though got one back for Wolves in the 55th minute and then assisted Jimenez’s goal in the 82nd minute. Doherty then scored the winner in the 89th minute to get Wolves the double over City. Wolves move into 5th 2 points behind Chelsea while City are now 14 points behind Liverpool in 3rd.
