Weekend Football Review

Replays for some of the big teams!

FA Cup 3rd Round

Rochdale 1 vs. 1 Newcastle

Almiron gave Newcastle the lead in the 17th minute as it looked like the Magpies would cruise to a victory but Rochdale grew into the game. Wilbraham then scored the equaliser in the 79th minute to take the game to a replay at Newcastle. Newcastle should win the replay as they will be at home but this game should have been done and dusted by the Premier League team.

Burnley 4 vs. 2 Peterborough

Rodriguez, Pieters, and Hendricks made it 3-0 within the first 30 minutes for Burnley. Toney then got a goal back for Peterborough before Rodriguez got a 4th for Burnley in the 52nd minute. Jade-Jones got a 2nd for the away side but it was nothing more than a consolation. A comfortable victory for Burnley as they can concentrate on survival in the league for now.

Brighton 0 vs. 1 Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday got an upset against Brighton at the Seagulls home as Reach scored the only goal of the game in the 65th minute. Sheffield progress to the next round while Brighton can now solely concentrate on finishing as high as they can in the Premier League.

Southampton 2 vs. 0 Huddersfield

Smallbone and Vokins scored in the 2nd half for Southampton as Hassenhutl fielded a rotated side and got the win against a struggling Huddersfield. Hassenhutl is gaining form in recent weeks as they try to reach as far as they can in the FA Cup and the League. Huddersfield can now focus on surviving relegation.

Watford 3 vs. 3 Tranmere

Bashiru, Chalobah and Pereyra scored within 35 minutes to give Watford a daunting 3-0 lead as it looked like a comfortable win. Jennings, Monthe, and Mullin though scored in the final 25 minutes of the game for Tranmere to take it to a replay. Tranmere will feel they can get a win at home against a Watford side that let themselves down.

Fulham 2 vs. 1 Aston Villa

Knockaert got Fulham the lead in the 53rd minute before Villa equalised through El Ghazi in the 63rd minute. Arter then got the winner in the 74th minute as Fulham got a big win against Villa. Fulham have been struggling this season and progressing in the FA Cup is a good silver lining while Villa can now put all their energy into surviving relegation although they are involved in the Carabao Cup as well.

Bournemouth 4 vs. 0 Luton

Billing got two while Wilson, and Solanke added the rest as Bournemouth got an expected win against Luton to progress to the next round. Bournemouth are just above the relegation zone in the league and so this is good respite for now.

Wolverhampton 0 vs. 0 Man United

Wolves dominated the game but United held on as Ole’s side managed to get a replay at Old Trafford. The fixture pile up will not help either team in the race for the top 6 positions in the League but it staying in the FA Cup is also a big bonus.

Man City 4 vs. 1 Port Vale

Zinchenko gave City the lead in the 19th minute before Port Vale surprisingly equalised in the 35th minute via Pope. Aguero then restored the lead in the 42nd minute and Bellis and Foden added goals in the 2nd half for home side. City get a routine win but still cannot keep a clean sheet as they look to win trophies this season.

Leicester 2 vs. 0 Wigan

Leicester got an expected win against Wigan as Pearce scored an own goal and Barnes got another for Leicester. Leicester are looking to reach the final of the Carabao Cup and can now also hope to progress in the FA Cup as well.

Middlesbrough 1 vs. 1 Tottenham

Fletcher gave the home side a big lead in the 50th minute but Moura came off the bench to equalise for Tottenham in the 61st minute and take the game to a replay. Middlesbrough will feel encouraged to win at Tottenham while Mourinho will not like the fixture pile up he has to deal with as he looks to enter the top four.

Sheffield United 2 vs. 1 Fylde

Robinson and Clarke got Sheffield a comfortable lead before Fylde made it a nervy ending as Williams scored for them in the 78th minute. Sheffield progress in the FA Cup as their season takes another good turn under Wilder.

Crystal Palace 0 vs. 1 Derby County

Martin got the goal in the 32 minute to send Derby to the next round as Palace were dumped out at the first hurdle. Derby’s season has not been great but this should be a silver lining for them for now.

Liverpool 1 vs. 0 Everton

The confidence at Liverpool seems to have been engraved into every single player whether that be a starter or a youngster as Liverpool’s B and C team combined beat Everton’s A team with a goal from Jones in the 71st minute that was a beautiful curling effort. Everton have plenty of work to under Ancelotti as Liverpool look to progress in another competition.

Gillingham 0 vs. 2 West Ham

Zabaleta and Fornals scored in the final 20 minutes as West Ham just about got over the line against Gillingham to continue their good form under Moyes. A drastic turn in fortunes for the Hammers and Moyes looks to gain faith from the fans.

Arsenal 1 vs. 0 Leeds

Nelson scored in the 55th minute as Arsenal responded in the 2nd half after being played out of the park by Bielsa’s team in the 1st half. Leeds should have easily been beyond Arsenal’s sight by the time the 2nd half came around but poor finishing let them down. Arteta can focus on the FA Cup as a possible trophy while I personally am hoping Leeds make it to the Prem for next season as they played some brilliant football yesterday.

La Liga MW 19

Sevilla got a draw against Bilbao 1-1, Real Madrid beat Getafe 0-3, Ateltico beat Levante 2-1, and Barcelona drew with Espanyol 2-2. Big weekend for Real as they go back level on points with Barcelona with both at 40. Atletico go to within 5 points of the two while Sevilla remain 4th to complete the top four.

Serie MW 18

Torino beat Roma 0-2, Juventus beat Cagliari 4-0 with Ronaldo scoring a hattrick, Atalanta beat Parma 5-0, Milan drew with Sampdoria as Zlatan failed to make impact in his first game, and Inter beat Napoli 1-3 with Conte continuing to win games. Inter and Juve remain level on points at the top of the table while Lazio and Roma make up the top four. Atalanta are 5th, Napoli are 8th and Milan are 12th.
