Chelsea 3 vs. 0 Burnley Review

Big win and a clean sheet at home!

Chelsea won 3-0 at home against Burnley while also keeping a clean sheet as we remain 4th but now 6 points behind Leicester still 5 ahead of United but now 9 ahead of Tottenham and 11 ahead of Arsenal. Lampard made some interesting changes to the lineup as Kepa started in goal with Azpilicueta as left back and Reece James as right back. Zouma, and Tomori were both rested as Rudiger and Christensen started as the centre backs. Jorginho, Barkley and Mount were the midfielders with Kante out due to a slight injury and Kovacic rested while Willian, Tammy and Hudson-Odoi made up the front three.

It was clear from the lineup that Lampard wanted goals and plenty of them as Chelsea looked to finally win at Stamford Bridge. The first 25 minutes were more of the same though as Chelsea dominated possession but created no clear cut chances while Burnley were happy to sit back and defend while posing some threat on the counter. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute as Willian was brought down in the box by Tarkowski. Tarkowski had pulled away from the challenge but there was contact and so Willian went down. Up stepped Jorginho and dispatched his penalty as Chelsea went ahead 1-0. Chelsea got some breathing space through the goal but Burnley were still happy to defend and counter. The 2nd goal came in the 38th minute as Hudson-Odoi played in an overlapping Reece James who crossed the ball into the box for Tammy to rise up and head into the net. 13th goal for Tammy this season as Chelsea went 2-0 up.

The 2nd half saw the game open up as Burnley could no longer sit back with them being 2 goals down. This allowed Chelsea to play in the spaces and the likes of Barkley and Mount began to dictate the play. Hudson-Odoi made it 3-0 in the 48th minute as Azpilicueta crossed the ball and CHO ran in behind to tap the ball in. First goal in the Premier League for CHO and a big relief to him as he continues to pick up form. The biggest threat came down the right hand side as Reece James, and Hudson-Odoi caused havoc for Burnley. Reece James delivered in countless crosses but the end product was lacking. Tammy missed a chance and Mount missed one late on as well as Chelsea could have easily been 5 or 6 nil up and Reece James could have had 3 assists. Lampard made no subs in the game as all the players played 90 minutes.

Player wise Kepa was solid, as he got a rare home clean sheet to his name as he also continues to gain form. Azpilicueta was comfortable at left back and got an assist as well. Christensen was great at the back has he showed improvement in his physicality along with his calmness on the ball, the Dane should continue to develop and play a big part going forward. Rudiger was good but at the moment it feels like if one of the centre backs were to leave in the future it would be the German. Reece James was stand out and my man of the match as he marauded the right hand side putting in 10 crosses getting an assist getting shots on target and just looking epic. The young full back should continue to develop in the coming weeks and months and years and who knows maybe he gets a call up to the Euro’s in the summer. Jorginho was Jorginho as dictated play while Barkley had a solid 90 minutes and played well in a deeper role. Mount was decent in the first half but got way better in the 2nd and should have probably had a goal for his efforts as ran all over the final 3rd. Willian got an assist and was ok down the left but compared to our right hand side the quality was lacking. Tammy got a goal and should have probably got 2 more as he played well once the game opened up. Hudson-Odoi got a goal and combined brilliantly with Reece on the right as he also gets back to form.

Another tick in Lampard’s development as he picked a good lineup and got the clean sheet and three points. Chelsea have no midweek game and so our next one is a trip to Newcastle next weekend. We need to continue to gain points as we face a tough February which could decide our top four future. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
