Let the games begin!
In the words of Fabrizio Romano “Here We Go”, as Chelsea make their first signing under Frank Lampard with 26 year old Moroccan Winger Hakim Ziyech set to join Chelsea from Ajax in the summer for around 34 million pounds. Just a little less than 2 weeks ago we ended the winter transfer window without any signings but the board seem to firmly have their eyes on the summer and getting business done before the Euros start.
It was around 6:30pm around the evening when news started to pour in that Ajax and Chelsea had a “verbal agreement” for the transfer of Ziyech in the summer. I dismissed it as nothing more than a rumour but then Ornstien picked it up and slowly several credible journalists started to go further by saying a deal was done. Suddenly Chelsea twitter was in a frenzy as people started pulling up memes, videos, edits etc as the fanbase went wild for such a quality signing. The clubs themselves did not announce anything until 24 hours later as Ajax first and then Chelsea posted that an agreement was in place subject to personal terms etc. Unlike the Pulisic deal Ziyech is still very much an Ajax player until July the 1st when he becomes a Chelsea one. A winter deal was what Lampard wanted apparently but Ajax and Ziyech have targets on their mind that they want to achieve.
Chelsea get a brilliant player who has registered double figures in both goals and assists since the 13/14 season, Ziyech was part of the academy at Heerenveen where he made his breakthrough before joining Twente for two seasons and then eventually moving to Ajax in 2016. Last season Ziyech made a career high 21 goals and 24 assists in 49 appearances as Ajax won the league and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. A left footed magician Chelsea saw his talent first hand this season as he provided 3 assists in the 4-4 draw against Ajax as well as scoring that amazing goal against Kepa. Ziyech’s cross field passes are a thing of magic and his in swinging crosses usually turn into goals if they find a runner. Ziyech can also play as a CAM but is better on the wings. Ziyech is most likely a replacement for either Willian or Pedro and he is a massive improvement on both. Ziyech will be 27 by the time August comes along and so he might be the oldest and most experienced winger in the team.
Ziyech is a great start to our summer transfers and we should follow this up with some more great acquisitions. Ziyech’s cost would be covered by the money that comes in from Morata and so he will not have impacted the 150-200 we should have for other transfers. Will we spend big on Sancho or will we invest elsewhere in the squad with some quality players that is yet to be seen. Chelsea continue to focus on getting Champions League and ending the season on a high while Ziyech can focus on ending his Ajax career on a high. Great player great signing, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!.
