Weekend Football Review

Races all over Europe heat up!

Premier League MW 26

Wolverhampton 0 vs. 0 Leicester

Deja vu for both teams as they held each other to a goalless draw again with Choudhary being sent off for Leicester in the 76th minute. Leicester remain 3rd but if Chelsea win win they could be 6 points from 4th while Wolves climb up to 7th with the point in a tight race for 5th.

Southampton 1 vs. 2 Burnley

Westwood scored in the 2nd minute to give Burnley the lead before Ings equalised in the 18th minute. Vydra then scored the winner in the 60th minute as Burnley made it 3 wins in their last 4 remaining 11th but joining the race for Europa League football. Southampton lost but climb into 12th with a better goal difference than teams around them. Hassenhutl is going through a small slump but Southampton should recover in the coming weeks.

Norwich 0 vs. 1 Liverpool

Liverpool continued their winning run but this season has been one of dogged performances rather than rock and roll football that Klopp is known for. Mane scored the winner in the 78th minute after coming off the bench. Liverpool are 25 points clear at the moment although City still need to play while Norwich remain bottom of the table 7 points from safety.

Aston Villa 2 vs. 3 Tottenham

A highly entertaining game that Tottenham eventually won thanks to a poor mistake from Engels in the final minutes. Alderweireld scored an own goal in the 9th minute to give Villa the lead but he redeemed himself in the 27th minute by equalising for Spurs. Son then scored right before half time to give Tottenham the lead. Engels equalised in the 53rd minute for Villa but then failed to stop the ball in the 94th minute which allowed Son to run through on goal and get three points for Spurs. Villa remain 17th a point above the relegation zone and will stay there unless West Ham beat City. Tottenham move into 5th a point behind Chelsea, and currently heading for the Champions League.

Arsenal 4 vs. 0 Newcastle

A brilliant 2nd half from the Gunners got them only their 2nd win under Arteta as Aubameyang, Pepe, Ozil, and Lacazette all scored in the final 45 to give some happiness to the supporters. Newcastle completely capsized after a decent first half display. Arsenal remain 10th a point behind United with United still to play while Newcastle drop down to 13th with a poor goal difference.

La Liga MW 24

Atletico drew with Valencia 2-2, Barcelona beat Getafe 2-1, Sevilla drew with Espanyol 2-2, and Real Madrid drew with Celta Vigo 2-2. Barcelona the big winners this weekend as they go to within a point of Real who still sit top of the table. Real did have Hazard return to the pitch but they faltered against lowly Celta. Real and Barcelona now in a league of their own while Getafe are 3rd and Atletico are 4th.

Serie MW 24

Atalanta beat Roma 2-1, Juventus beat Brescia 2-0, Napoli beat Cagliari 0-1, and Lazio beat Inter 2-1. Juventus the big winners this weekend but it is now very much a 3 horse race in Italy as Lazio move into 2nd a point behind Juventus. Inter drop down into 3rd 3 points behind Juventus. Atalanta are 4th but not in the race while Roma are 6 points behind in 5th. Napoli are 8th in the table while Milan are yet to play as they sit 10th.

Bundesliga MW 22

Dortmund beat Frankfurt 4-0, Leipzig beat Werder Bremen 3-0, Monchengladbach beat Dusseldorf 1-4, Bayern beat Koln 1-4, and Schalke drew with Mainz. The top 5 teams all win in Germany this weekend as the race remains the same with Bayern leading by a point while Leipzig, Dortmund, Monchengladbach, and Leverkusen are all behind them. Games between the teams will decide who ultimately wins this title.

Ligue MW 25

Monaco beat Montpellier 1-0, PSG came from behind to draw against Amiens 4-4, Lyon beat Strasbourg 1-1, and Marseille beat Lille 1-2. Marseille the big winners this weekend as they go to within 10 of PSG which is still a big gap. Rennes are 3rd while Lille are 4th and Monaco are up to 5th now only 3 points from 3rd. The race for Champions League football more entertaining at the moment than the title similar to the Premier League.
