Weekend Football Review

Some surprise results with all leagues back up!

Premier League MW 30

Norwich 0 vs. 3 Southampton

After a close 1st half Southampton were able to get the job done in the 2nd as Ings, Armstrong, and Redmond all scored in a comfortable win. Norwich remain 6 points from safety while Southampton remain 14th but only 3 points from 10th.

Tottenham 1 vs. 1 Man United

This game was a drab affair as the first half clearly showed that the two teams were rusty. Tottenham were obviously on the defensive and playing on the counter while United had more of the ball but didn’t know how to break Spurs down. The first goal came in the 27th minute as Bergwijn ran through on goal leaving Maguire behind in what was some really poor defending, and the young dutchman blasted the ball past De Gea who himself showed some poor goalscoring skills. The 2nd half saw United grow into the game as Spurs began to tire and once Pogba was on things changed. The Frenchman was lively and linked well with Fernandes as they created some brilliant chances. Pogba managed a penalty in the 81st minute which Bruno converted and Spurs were perhaps lucky to leave the stadium with a point. Tottenham remain 8th now 9 points away from 4th while United remain 5th now 5 points behind 4th.

Watford 1 vs. 1 Leicester

This game was quite entertaining and came alive in the final minutes as Chilwell scored an absolute screamer in the 90th minute to give Leicester the lead. Watford though gained a point as Dawson scored a brilliant goal of his own 3 minutes later. Watford move one place up into 16th 1 point clear of the relegation zone. Leicester remain 3rd only 3 points from 4th.

Brighton 2 vs. 1 Arsenal

Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal as Brighton got the league double over the Gunners in a highly entertaining game. Leno was injured in the 1st half as he went up for the ball while Maupay also went for it and both clashed as Leno landed awkwardly on his knee. The injury does look serious and Leno could be out until late next season. Pepe did give Arsenal the lead in the 68th minute with a brilliant finesse shot but it was short lived as Dunk equalised in the 75th minute after some comical defending by Arsenal. Arsenal still looked like they were heading for a point though but Maupay ran through on goal and volleyed past Martinez in the 95th minute for the icing on the cake. Arsenal players showed anger after the final whistle and if they had even shown a fraction of that during the game they could have won. Brighton remain 15th but now 5 points clear of the relegation zone while Arsenal drop down into 10th with Arteta in a massive storm.

West Ham 0 vs. 2 Wolverhampton

Wolves were brilliant in this game as it was only a matter of when and not if the away team would score. West Ham were way off pace and it could be a tough end of the season for them as they look to avoid relegation. Jimenez, and Neto scored goals in the 2nd half with Neto’s being an exquisite volley via a brilliant Traore cross. West Ham drop into 17th above the relegation zone on goal difference while Wolves move into 6th level on points with United.

Bournemouth 0 vs. 2 Crystal Palace

Milivojevic, and Ayew scored in the 1st half as Palace comfortably beat Bournemouth to gain 3 points in their first game. Bournemouth had no real reply as they looked rusty at best. Bournemouth remain 18th and in the relegation zone on goal difference while Palace move into 9th and 2 points from a Europa League finish.

Newcastle 3 vs. 0 Sheffield United

Another team who’s luck seems to have left them since football returned has been Sheffield as they lost in poor fashion to Newcastle. After a tight first half Egan was sent off in the 50th minute for the Blades and Newcastle found an opportunity. Saint-Maximin, Ritchie and Joelinton all proceeded to score as Newcastle gained a big win. Newcastle remain 13th in the table 2 points from 10th while Sheffield drop into 7th and 7 points from 4th.

Everton 0 vs. 0 Liverpool

Perhaps the most anticipated game of the weekend for neutrals and probably the most boring one as Everton held Liverpool to a draw although neither team looked like they wanted to win the game. It is clear that Klopp is taking it easy as there was a lack of urgency while Everton probably did well to gain a point with a solid performance. Everton looked more likely to score as they missed some brilliant chances. Everton remain 12th 2 points from 10th while Liverpool remain top of the table although now only 20 points ahead.

Man City 5 vs. 0 Burnley

No surprise here as City thrashed Burnley and look like they have been the team to most benefit from a lockdown. Pep rotated heavily for this game and the players answered with some good performances. Foden got two goals, Mahrez got two goals, and David Silva added the other as Burnley had no reply. City remain 2nd but move within 20 of Liverpool while Burnley drop down to 11th a point from 10th.

Bardhi restored the lead for Levante in the 67th minute and Pedrosa scored an own goal to seal the win for Levante in the 87th minute. Espanyol move to the bottom of the table 5 points from safety while Levante remain 11th with the win.

Bilbao 1 vs. 0 Real Betis

Martinez scored in the 7th minute and it was enough for Bilbao to gain 3 points as Betis had no reply. Bilbao remain 10th with the win while Betis remain 14th.

Getafe 1 vs. 1 Eibar

Etebo gave Getafe the lead in the 30th minute but Charles equalised for Eibar right before half time. Neither team could break the deadlock in the 2nd half. Getafe remain 5th but now only on goal difference and 4 points from 4th as their poor form post lockdown continues. Eibar drop down to 17th only 3 points above the relegation zone.

Atletico Madrid 1 vs. 0 Valladolid

A goal by Vitolo in the 81st minute was enough to clinch 3 points for Atletico as they continue their brilliant form post lockdown. Atletico remain 4th but now only a point behind Sevilla while Valladolid remain 15th in the table.

Celta Vigo 6 vs. 0 Alaves

Celta Vigo got a massive win against Alaves with Murillo and Aspas scoring within 21 minutes to give the home team the lead. Aguirregabiria was sent off for Alaves in the 27th minute and Vigo then capitalised. Rafinha scored two while Nolito and Mina added the other two in a big win. The win takes Celta to 16th 4 points clear of the relegation zone drop down to 13th in the table.

Valencia 2 vs. 0 Osasuna

Guedes and Rodrigo scored in the 1st half to gain 3 points for Valencia in a comfortable win. Valencia remain 8th in the table 2 points from a Europa League spot while Osasuna actually move one place up into 12th on goal difference.

Real Sociedad 1 vs. 2 Real Madrid

Ramos and Benzema scored in the 2nd half with Benzema’s goal a quite brilliant one as Sociedad could only manage 1 goal late on via Merino. Real Sociedad continue their poor form as they drop down to 7th while Real Madrid move to the top of the table.

Serie MW 27

Torino 1 vs. 1 Parma

Nkoulou gave Torino the lead in the 15th minute but Kucka equalised in the 31st minute as Parma managed a point. Torino remain 15th in the table while Parma remain 9th in the table.

Verona remain 8th in the table while Cagliari move one up into 11th on goal difference.

Atalanta 4 vs. 1 Sassuolo

There is no stopping high scoring Atalanta as they managed another big win against Sassuolo.
