Weekend Football Preview

FA Cup is back!

Premier League MW 32

Aston Villa vs. Wolverhampton

Aston Villa sit 19th in the table as they take on 6th placed Wolves who could go into 5th and 2 points behind Chelsea with a win. 3 points for Villa could take them up to 16th in the table although based on form Wolves should get 3 points to add to their tally. Villa need to start winning but this game could be too tough for the home team. Wolves won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Watford vs. Southampton

16th placed Watford can increase their distance from the relegation zone if they beat 14th placed Southampton. Southampton suffered a lazy loss against Arsenal and will be looking to return to winning ways although Watford have been in decent form. This should be a tough game between the two teams and the result could go either way. Southampton won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Crystal Palace vs. Burnley

10th vs. 11th in what is firmly a mid table clash as both teams look to enter the top 10. The two teams have had mixed results since football resumed and so this should be an interesting game. The result could go either way but both teams are looking at a potential Europa League spot. Palace won the reverse fixture 0-2.

FA Cup Quarter-Finals

Norwich vs. Man United

Norwich beat Spurs on penalties to reach this stage of the FA Cup while United beat Derby County 0-3 in what was a comfortable win. United have been in good form since the return of football and with Pogba back and the team playing well Norwich should be no match. The lockdown seems to have done Norwich no good as they have returned in similar poor form but the FA Cup is a separate tournament and their is nothing to lose. United should win even with a rotated squad but it could be a tricky game.

Sheffield United vs. Arsenal

Sheffield United beat Reading 1-2 and Arsenal beat Portsmouth 0-2 to reach this stage of the FA Cup. Sheffield United were clearly the better team before the lockdown but recent results have seen them lose that form while Arsenal have been as poor as before. As it stands though this should be an interesting game and Sheffield United still have enough quality to win the game although Arsenal will feel that the FA Cup is their one shot at some redemption this season.

Newcastle vs. Man City

Holders Man City take on Newcastle as they look to add a 2nd trophy to their season having relinquished the Premier League title to Liverpool during the week. Newcastle beat West Brom 2-3 to reach this stage while Man City beat Sheffield Wednesday 0-1. Anything can happen in an FA Cup game and while Newcastle have been decent since football returned I still expect Man City to reach the Semis with minimal effort.

La Liga MW 32

Sevilla vs. Valladolid

4th placed Sevilla take on 15th placed Valladolid in what should be an easy game for the home team. Sevilla are just looking to maintain their Champions League spot with around 7 games left to go. Valladolid are nearing that mid table safety but this game should be too much for them. Sevilla won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Bilbao vs. Mallorca

10th placed Bilbao take on 18th placed Mallorca in a game that the away team needs to win. Mallorca are 6 points from safety and need to start racking up wins if they want to survive this season. The reverse fixture was a 0-0 draw.

Celta Vigo vs. Barcelona

16th placed Celta take on 2nd placed Barcelona in what should be an interesting game. Barcelona should win this game but Celta have been decent and Barca have been dubious at best. Celta could edge a win. Barcelona won the reverse fixture 4-1.

Osasuna vs. Leganes

11th placed Osasuna take on 19th placed Leganes in what is probably going to be 3 easy points for the home team. Leganes are 7 points from safety and are looking at relegation and Osasuna should be one team too much. Osasuna won the reverse fixute 0-1.

Atletico Madrid vs. Alaves

3rd placed Atletico take on 14th placed Alaves. Atletico have been in solid form since football resumed and this should be another win as they look to consolidate 3rd for themselves. Alaves are looking to creep up the table but this should be a bump in their road. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Levante vs. Real Betis

12th vs 13th in a game of no real consequence. Betis won the reverse fixure 3-1.

Villarreal vs. Valencia

6th vs. 8th as both teams look to move up the table. Villarreal have been in brilliant form though as Valencia have struggled to win at times. Based on recent results I expect Villarreal to take the 3 points. Valencia won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Granada vs. Eibar

9th vs. 17th as Eibar look to maintain their decent form and increase their distance from the relegation zone. Granada don’t really have much to play for but a top 10 finish is always a good stamp. Eibar won the reverse fixture 3-0.

Espanyol vs. Real Madrid

20th vs. 1st in what should be 3 easy points for Real Madrid. Espanyol are far from safety and need to start winning but that won’t happen in this game. Madrid won the reverse fixture 2-0.

Getafe vs. Real Sociedad

5th vs. 7th as two teams who have had similar form go head to head. Getafe have been no where near as good as pre lockdown but have managed draws while the same can be said for Sociedad but the away team has been losing their games. The two teams need a win and 3 points could lift the mood up for either team. Getafe beat Real Sociedad 1-2.

Serie MW 28

Juventus vs. Lecce

1st placed Juventus take on 18th placed Lecce with both teams needing wins. Juventus are looking to maintain their gap at the top while Lecce can move out of the relegation zone with a win. Juventus have been shaky but they should have enough to dispatch of Lecce. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Brescia vs. Genoa

20th vs. 17th in a bottom of the table clash. Brescia are 8 points behind Genoa and a loss or a draw would not help the home team at all. Genoa can remain outside the relegation zone with a win and the away team is in better form. Genoa won the reverse fixture 3-1.

Cagliari vs. Torino

10th vs. 13th in a mid table clash with neither near any sort of success or danger. Torino drew the reverse fixture 1-1.

Lazio vs. Fiorentina

2nd vs. 14th as Lazio look to bounce back from their loss and keep close to Juventus. Fiorentina are looking to maintain their gap from the relegation zone but its going to be tough to beat Lazio. Lazio won the reverse fixture 1-2.

AC Milan vs. AS Roma

7th vs. 5th in a big game between two historic teams. Milan have some gap to bridge to reach 5th but a win could help them go closer while Roma will look to keep reaching out to the top four. This should be an interesting game. Roma won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Napoli vs. SPAL

6th vs. 19th as Napoli should be able to get 3 points against SPAL who are struggling to bridge the gap to safety. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Sampdoria vs. Bologna

16th vs. 11th as Sampdoria aim to keep distance from the relegation zone. The home team sit just a point above it and so any dropped points could see them move into the zone. Bologna are just looking to break into the top 10 at the moment. Bologna won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Udinese vs. Atalanta

The most entertaining team in the league in Atalanta take on 15th placed Udinese who are just 3 points above the relegation zone. Atalanta are looking to maintain their 4th place position and they should be able to with their free scoring form. Atalanta thrashed Udinese 7-1 in the reverse fixture.

Sassuolo vs. Verona

12th placed Sassuolo take on 9th placed Verona in a mid table battle. Sassuolo really need to start winning games while Verona have been decent at best. Sassuolo won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Parma vs. Inter Milan

8th placed Parma take on 3rd placed Inter with Conte’s men really needing to win to keep within touching distance of a title race. Another loss would not be great for the away team while Parma are searching for the 3 points as they look at a possible Europa League finish. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

Bundesliga MW 34

Union Berlin vs. Dusseldorf

12th placed Union Berlin take on 16th placed Dusseldorf as the highest Union can finish is 11th. Dusseldorf on the other hand at the moment would head into a two legged play off against Bundesliga 2’s 3rd placed team but Werder Bremen are just 2 points behind them. A massive must win game for Dusseldorf otherwise they would need to hope Werder Bremen lose as well. Dusseldorf won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Monchengladbach vs. Hertha Berlin

10th placed Hertha take on 4th placed Monchengladbach with the home team looking to seal the final Champions League spot. Monchengladbach can finish in 3rd as well if Leipzig lose but a loss and a Leverkusen win would see them drop out of the top four. Hertha have no real stakes but could ruin the party. The reverse fixture was a 0-0 draw.

Wolfsburg vs. Bayern Munich

6th placed Wolfsburg take on league Champions Bayern Munich. Wolfsburg need to win or hope that Hoffenheim lose as they aim to finish in the Europa League place while Bayern will hope to finish the season on a high. A big and tough game for the home team. Munich won the reverse fixture 2-0.

Frankfurt vs. Paderborn

9th vs. 18th as Frankfurt take on Paderborn. Frankfurt have been in brilliant form since football returned and will want to end the season well. Paderborn played decent football but will be heading back down although they will want to go down fighting. Paderborn won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Werder Bremen vs. Koln

17th placed Werder take on 14th placed Koln who can go up to 11th with a win. 3 points for Bremen and a loss to Dusseldorf would see the home team enter the play offs and get a 2nd chance at survival. Koln though will wan to finish as high as possible in terms of financial benefit. Koln won the reverse fixture 1-0.

Freiburg vs. Schalke

8th placed Freiburg take on 11th placed Schalke with the away team in dismal form. Freiburg can go no higher than 8th but a loss could see them finish 9th and so the win will be imperative. Schalke can still finish 10th but in current form Freiburg should win. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

Leverkusen vs. Mainz

5th placed Leverkusen take on 13th placed Mainz as the home team looks to pull off a final day steal. Leverkusen are just two points behind Monchengladbach and a win would take them into 4th. A loss though would see them remain 5th. Mainz can go up to 11th with a win. Leverkusen won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Dortmund vs. Hoffenheim

2nd vs. 7th as Hoffenheim look to enter the Europa League spot for next season. Hoffenheim are level on points with Wolfsburg and any dropped points Wolfsburg could see Hoffenheim go through with a draw or a loss. Hoffenheim won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Augsburg vs. RB Leipzig

3rd placed Leipzig take on 15th placed Augsburg with the home team having saved their place in next seasons Bundesliga. Leipzig cannot drop out of the top four due to their hefty goal difference but the away team will want to finish 3rd. Werner will also be playing his last game for the club as he joins Chelsea in July. Leipzig won the reverse fixture 3-1.

Football continues but the Bundesliga will be coming to an end although Bayern Munich will still be involved in the Champions League come August.
