Leicester City 0 vs. 1 Chelsea FA Cup Quarter-Final Review

Keep winning but the performance was poor.

Chelsea beat Leicester at the King Power by a goal to nil to book a place at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final. The performance itself was poor as Chelsea really struggled in the 1st half although were better in the 2nd. Rodgers selected a strong lineup with the first team basically starting the game although Maddison was out due to injury. Lampard rotated the squad in some areas as Caballero started in goal with Emerson and James as the full backs and Zouma and Rudiger in defence. Kante started in front of the defence while Gilmour and Mount started in further forward. Pulisic and Willian continued on the wings and Tammy started up front.

From the 1st whistle it was evident that we were struggling to gain possession of the ball with both Jorginho and Kovacic on the bench. Gilmour struggled for the 1st 45 minutes minutes as he misplaced several passes and just looked out of flow. Leicester dominated the opening 15-20 minutes but Chelsea weathered the storm and began to grow back into the game. The 1st half saw some decent chances that mostly came through Willian and Pulisic creating chances but there was no lead.

Lampard made 3 changes at half time with Kovacic, Barkley, and Azpilicueta coming on for Gilmour, Reece James and Mount coming off. Lampard stated in his post match that all three players will be future stars for Chelsea but today they just lacked it as did most of the team. The changes did make a difference as we began to control the ball and Azpilicueta brought more solidity to the defence. Barkley looked hungry and got the goal in the 63rd minute after a brilliant cross from Willian found the midfielder. Chelsea saw out the game while creating some more decent chances but Leicester could not break the defence.

Player wise Caballero was decent and made some good saves although he didn’t have much to do. Reece James was actually decent in my opinion and better than his cameo against Villa. Rudiger was solid once again but Zouma looked the better defender making some big tackles. I continue to state Zouma and Christensen are our best partnership. Emerson was decent but again we need a better left back. Gilmour did not have the best game but he is young and will learn, that is all that should be said, there were still some good moments. Mount was decent but clearly looked tired and so taking him off was a good decision. Kante was once again solid although whether his is the best person to play as the loan defensive midfielder is not clear. Willian is playing like a player who needs a contract next season and so the likes of Arsenal should be paying attention, the assist was good. Tammy was decent and his link up play was good although he did lack service. Pulisic was man of the match as he once again ran at defenders created and executed chances and was our most dangerous players. Kova was good when he came on while Barkley did well for the goal although he did misplace several passes in the final third. Azpi was solid once again as shows age is just a number while Loftus-Cheek and Pedro didn’t get much time to make an impact. Lampard once again rates highly for making the changes and getting the win and his post match comments about this being the worst performance only proves that he is a good manager.

The FA Cup semi-final is going to be played towards the end of July and so there is plenty of time although the team we face will be Manchester United at Wembley. Plenty of backstory there but lets focus on the league for now. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
