Weekend Football Preview

Big big games!

Premier League MW 35

Watford vs. Newcastle

17th placed Watford take on 13th placed Newcastle in a must win game for the home team. Watford did well to beat Norwich but Newcastle are a better team and should pose more of a threat. The game could go either way. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Norwich vs. West Ham

Lowly Norwich sit 10 points from safety and a loss in this game will seal their relegation for the season. West Ham are 16th and 3 points above the relegation zone as the Hammers also need to win to maintain their distance. A big game for either team that based on current form would go in West Ham’s favour. West Ham won the reverse fixture 2-0.

Liverpool vs. Burnley

League champions Liverpool are looking to break the points record as they take on 10th placed Burnley who have the Europa League in their sites. Burnley are brilliant defensively while Liverpool aren’t really that ruthless since winning the title. An interesting game and I have a feeling Burnley could manage a point or more. The reverse fixture was a 0-3 win for Liverpool.

Brighton vs. Man City

15th placed Brighton are all but safe for the season as they take on Man City who have been far from consistent recently. An interesting game for both teams and it should be a high scoring affair. City would be favourites but Brighton can manage something. The reverse fixture was a 4-0 win for City.

Wolverhampton vs. Everton

A big games for Wolves as they sit 6th and are drifting farther away from the top 5 this is a must win game for the home team. Everton have done well but haven’t won in their las two either as the Europa League is still mathematically possible but they would have to take 3 points. Massive for both teams. Everton won the reverse fixture 3-2.

Aston Villa vs. Crystal Palace

19th placed Villa take on 14th placed Palace with Villa needing a win to stand a chance at survival. This is a must win game for Dean Smith and team as they sit 4 points from safety. Palace are languishing at 14th with no real targets. The reverse fixture was a 1-0 win for Palace.

Tottenham vs. Arsenal

9th vs. 8th but a North London Derby none the less as the two fight it out for Europa League football. The winner will go 3 points clear of the other and at the moment I would label Arsenal as favourites although you can never count out Mourinho. A must watch game for the banter. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

Bournemouth vs. Leicester

18th placed Bournemouth are 3 points from safety as they need to win to keep hopes of survival alive. Leicester are 4th and only a point above 5th as they themselves need to return to winning ways to maintain their top four spot. A big game for both teams and neither will want to lose. The reverse fixture was a 3-1 win for Leicester.

Man United vs. Southampton

Man United are 5th and the in form team at the moment as they notch win after win and score 3 or more goals doing it. Most of the teams they have played have been relegation threats or mid table though. 12th placed Southampton are perhaps their toughest opponents yet as Hassenhutl will want to end United’s winning run. An interesting game but United would be favourites. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

La Liga MW 35 and 36

Real Sociedad vs. Granada (MW 35)

7th vs. 10th as Real Sociedad look to return to winning ways and at least clinch a Europa League spot. Granada themselves have an outside chance at making the Europa League. Sociedad won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Real Madrid vs. Alaves (MW 35)

League leaders Real take on 17th placed Alaves with the team only 3 points above the relegation one. This should be a straight forward win for Madrid. Real won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Osasuna vs. Celta Vigo

11th vs. 16th as Osasuna take on Celta Vigo. Celta are 4 points above the relegation zone but a win could seal safety for the away team while Osasuna dont’ really have much to play for. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Valladolid vs. Barcelona

14th placed Valladolid are 7 points from the relegation zone and a win, loss or draw could be enough to guarantee safety depending on results elsewhere. Barcelona need to win to keep their title hopes alive otherwise Real Madrid could seal the title with a win during MW 36. The reverse fixture was a 5-1 win for Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid vs. Real Betis

Atletico can seal a top four spot with a win against 13th placed Real Betis who are safe for the season. Atletico sit 3rd and 6 points from 5th. Atletico won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Espanyol vs. Eibar

Relegated Espanyol take on 15th placed Eibar who sit 4 points above the relegation zone. Espanyol have nothing to lose now while Eibar can seal safety with a win against the home team. Espanyol won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Levante vs. Bilbao

12th vs. 9th in a nothing game as Levante take on Bilbao. Bilbao are 5 points from 6th though and with Getafe playing poorly they have an outside chance at a Europa League place but would need to win this game. Bilbao won the reverse fixture 2-1.

Leganes vs. Valencia

Leganes sit 19th and 6 points from safety as a loss against 8th placed Valencia would relegate the home team. Valencia are 3 points from 6th and have a chance at the Europa League and so the away team has enough motivation to win. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Sevilla vs. Mallorca

4th placed Sevilla can seal Champions League football with a win while 18th placed Mallorca sit 3 points from safety and need to win themselves. A big game for both teams but Sevilla would be favourites. Sevilla won the reverse fixture 0-2.

Villarreal vs. Real Sociedad

5th placed Villarreal can guarantee a Europa League spot if they beat Sociedad while also keeping themselves within distance of a top four spot as well if teams above them drop points. Real Sociedad have fallen heavily since football returned but are only 2 points behind Getafe and so a win could keep their Europa League hopes alive. Villarreal won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Alaves vs. Getafe

17th placed Alaves sit 3 points above the relegation zone as they take on 6th placed Getafe who have been extremely poor since football returned. A big game for both teams but too close to call. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Granada vs. Real Madrid

10th placed Granada take on leaders Real Madrid and depending on what happens on Friday Real could seal the title with a win against Granada and if Barcelona drop points. Real beat Granada 4-2 in the reverse fixture.

Serie MW 32

Lazio vs. Sassuolo

2nd placed Lazio are under threat from below as they take on 8th placed Sassuolo who have outside chances at a Europa League spot. Lazio have lost their last two games and so this is a big one to win while Sassuolo are in good form.

Brescia vs. AS Roma

19th placed Brescia are looking like relegation candidates as they take on 5th placed Roma who are looking to maintain their Europa League spot. Roma should win this game.

Juventus vs. Atalanta

A big game for Juventus and Atalanta as the league leaders were thumped by Milan during the week. Atalanta can go to within 6 points of Juventus with a win and the away team are the more exciting team to watch at the moment. An interesting game for sure.

Genoa vs. SPAL

18th vs. 20th in a relegation battle. Genoa are a point from safety and can exit the relegation zone with a win while SPAL need to win to keep their hopes of survival alive.

Parma vs. Bologna

12th vs. 10th in a bit of a nothing game with neither team close to anything.

Fiorentina vs. Verona

13th vs 9th in another game with not much at stake.

Cagliari vs. Lecce

11th vs. 17th as Cagliari entertain Lecce. Lecce are looking to build on their win and continue their journey away from the relegation zone although Cagliari are tough opponents.

Udinese vs. Sampdoria

14th vs. 16th as Udinese welcome Sampdoria. Sampdoria are looking to keep distance from the relegation zone while Udinese are 8 points clear of it.

Napoli vs. AC Milan

6th vs. 7th in what is a massive game for both teams. Gattuso takes on his old team in AC Milan as they race for a Europa League place. Milan can enter 6th with a win while Napoli can create some distance. A big game between two in form teams.

Inter Milan vs. Torino

4th vs. 15th as Inter take on Torino. Inter want to return to winning ways with 3 points while Torino are looking to keep themselves away from the relegation zone.
