Midweek Football Preview

The final few laps!

Premier League MW 36

Newcastle vs. Tottenham

13th vs. 8th as Tottenham head to Newcastle after their win against Arsenal during the weekend. Tottenham find themselves 3 points behind Wolves and a potential Europa League place as they look to finish in the top 6. Newcastle don’t have much to play for but would like to win their final few games. Tottenham on paper should win. Newcastle won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Burnley vs. Wolverhampton

A big game for both teams as 10th placed Burnley take on 6th placed Wolves. The two teams have been in good form post lockdown and both are looking at places in Europe. Burnley are 5 points from Wolves and that gap would be cut down to 2 while Wolves could extend their gap with a win and would rule Burnley out of contention while moving closer to 5th. A big and interesting game for both teams. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Man City vs. Bournemouth

City take on Bournemouth who got a resounding win against Leicester during the weekend. They find themselves 3 points from safety and all still to play for. Relegation is not certain with a loss for the Cherries but they would like to win. City look like favourites though and it would take a bigger miracle for Bournemouth to leave with a point or more. City won the reverse fixture 1-3.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool

9th placed Arsenal take on leaders Liverpool as both teams look to bounce back from dropping points during the weekend. Arsenal lost to Spurs and Liverpool could not break down the Burnley defence. Arsenal are 5 points from Europa League football and a loss would rule them out of Europe for next season and perhaps that is best for the Gunners. Liverpool have looked beatable though but this should be easy points for the away team. Liverpool won the reverse fixture 3-1.

Everton vs. Aston Villa

11th vs. 19th with Villa looking to continue from their win at the weekend. Everton won’t be playing in Europe next season as any distant dream was ended during the weekend. Villa though are only 4 points from safety but have to win this game to keep their hopes of survival realistic. If Villa lose and results don’t go their way they will be relegated. Villa won the reverse fixture 2-0.

Leicester vs. Sheffield United

A massive game as 4th placed Leicester take on 7th placed Sheffield United. Leicester once again lost in poor fashion to Bournemouth during the weekend and could see themselves drop out of the top four if they lose this game and Man United win. Sheffield on the other hand have been building form and beat Chelsea 3-0 during the weekend as they sit a point behind Wolves. A loss for Sheffield would make Champions League impossible but it would still keep top 6 hopes alive but a win would put them right back into contention. Leicester won the reverse fixture 1-2.

Southampton vs. Brighton

12th vs. 15th as in form Southampton take on struggling Brighton. Southampton have put good results together and are looking at 3 points as they take on Brighton who are still very much in a relegation battle sitting only 5 points above the zone. A win would make things easier and guarantee them safety while a loss make things nervy.  Southampton won the reverse fixture 0-2.

Crystal Palace vs. Man United

14th placed Palace take on 5th placed United with both teams looking to bounce back from dropping points. United have much more at stake though as they look to make the top four. Palace have nothing to lose and will know that if they can put a solid defensive shift in they can get something out of United. United should win this game though but it would make things interesting if they dropped points. Palace won the reverse fixture 1-2.

La Liga MW 37

Barcelona vs. Osasuna

2nd placed Barcelona take on 11th placed Osasuna knowing that the title is out of their hands. All Messi and co can do is hope win and hope that Real lose but if Real win then the title is going to Madrid. Osasuna don’t have much to play for other than a top 10 finish. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

Mallorca vs. Granada

19th placed Mallorca take on 10th placed Granada in what is a must win game for the home team. Mallorca need to win and hope that Alaves and or Celta Vigo drop points so that their hopes of survival stay alive. Granada are just looking to finish in the top 10. Granada won the reverse fixture 1-0.

Celta Vigo vs. Levante

Celta can seal safety with a win against Levante as they sit 16th and 4 points above the relegation zone. A loss could also be enough for Celta but it would depend on results elsewhere. Levante sit 12th and don’t have anything to play for. The reverse fixture was a 3-1 win for Levante.

Real Sociedad vs. Sevilla

A big game for 7th placed Sociedad as they look to finish in the Europa League while Sevilla have already sealed their top four spot. A loss for Sociedad would make matters bleak but won’t rule them out till the final day. A win would possibly put top 6 in their hands. Big game. Sevilla won the reverse fixture 3-2.

Real Betis vs. Alaves

13th placed Betis take on 17th placed Alaves with Alaves needing a win. 3 points for the away team would seal safety for them but a loss would possibly drag matters to the final day. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Valencia vs. Espanyol

9th placed Valencia still have a chance at top 6 but they have to win this game and hope that others drop points. Espanyol on the other hand are already relegated and so have nothing to lose. The reverse fixture was a 1-2 win for Valencia.

Getafe vs. Atletico Madrid

6th placed Getafe take on 3rd placed Atletico with Getafe looking to finish in the top 6. A win would take Getafe closer while a loss would for sure take matters to the final day and out of their hands. Atletico have already sealed their top 4 spot but are still fighting for 3rd with Sevilla. The reverse fixture was a 1-0 win for Atletico.

Eibar vs. Valladolid

15th vs. 14th with neither team having anything to play for. The reverse fixture was a 2-0 win for Valladolid.

Real Madrid vs. Villarreal

This is it for Real as they can win the title with a win against Villarreal in what is probably the home teams toughest game post lockdown. Villarreal themselves have done well and are looking to seal a top 5 spot with a win of their own. An entertaining game is expected. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

Bilbao vs. Leganes

Bilbao sit 8th and have a remote chance at top 6 but need to win this game. Leganes are 4 points from safety and need to win themselves and hope that Celta or Alaves drop points. A big game for both teams. The reverse fixture was a 1-1 draw.

Serie MW 33

Atalanta vs. Brescia

4th placed Atalanta take on 19th placed Brescia in what should be 3 easy points for the home team as they look to maintain their top 4 place. Brescia need to start winning but won’t happen in this game. Atalanta won the reverse fixture 0-3.

Sampdoria vs. Cagliari

14th vs. 11th as Sampdoria take on Cagliari. Cagliari won the reverse fixture 4-3.

Bologna vs. Napoli

10th placed Bologna take on 6th placed Napoli with the away team looking to maintain their top 6 spot. Bologna won the reverse fixture 1-2.

AC Milan vs. Parma

7th placed Milan take on 12th placed Parma with Milan pushing for that top 6 spot. Milan won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Lecce vs. Fiorentina

18th placed Lecce take on 13th placed Fiorentina with Lecce looking to escape the relegation zone. Lecce won the reverse fixture 0-1.

Sassuolo vs. Juventus

Tough game for Juventus as they take on 8th placed Sassuolo who are in good form at the moment. The reverse fixture was a 2-2 draw.

AS Roma vs. Verona

5th vs. 9th as AS Roma look to maintain their top 6 spot with a visit by Verona. The reverse fixture was a 1-3 win for Roma.

Udinese vs. Lazio

3rd place Lazio are looking to bounce back as they take on 15th placed Udinese. Lazio won the reverse fixture 3-0.

Torino vs. Genoa

17th placed Genoa are looking to keep themselves out of the relegation zone as they visit 16th placed Torino. Torino won the reverse fixture 0-1.

SPAL vs. Inter Milan

Inter are looking to close the gap to Juventus as they travel to bottom of the table SPAL. Inter won the reverse fixture 2-1.
