Build on the United win!
Chelsea will travel to Liverpool on Wednesday night as the Blues look to seal a top four spot and a place in the Champions League next season. It will be no easy task as we will take on Liverpool who will be lifting the Premier League title after the game. Liverpool have played 7 games post lockdown having won 3 drawn 2 and lost 2. The two losses came against Man City and Arsenal and perhaps the fact is that having won the League Liverpool have dropped off in recent weeks. The motivation might be lacking and there aren’t many records left that Liverpool can break. The Liverpool players will just be counting down the minutes until they can lift the title and the fact that it was our win against City that gave them the title they really should do us a favour in this game.
Chelsea go into this game having played Liverpool 3 times this season. Once in the Super Cup which we lost on penalties, once in the league where we lost 1-2, and once in the FA Cup where we won 2-0. All the games have been close while the FA Cup win was a good one. Lampard was asked about Liverpool’s drop off and he said that it happens to most teams if they win the title early. Lampard stated that he was not thinking about anything other than the two games ahead. A win for Chelsea tonight would seal a top four spot as Leicester lost to Spurs. A draw would keep us in the top four but would mean that nothing would be certain till the final day. Of course we have the benefit of knowing the United West Ham result heading into the game against Liverpool. Liverpool will have the added motivation of wanting to maintain their home unbeaten run but Chelsea have been known to spoil Liverpool’s parties on a number of ocassions.
Chelsea Team Preview
Chelsea will be without Kante who is not fit for the game. 4 at the back was the norm against Liverpool for much of the season but with the personnel we have I think we might keep the 3 at the back. Kepa should start in goal with Azpilicueta, Zouma, and Rudiger making up the back three. Mount and Kovacic should start in midfield with Alonso and Reece James as the wing backs. Pulisic and Willian should start up front with Giroud leading the attack. The physical presence of Giroud should help against the likes of Van Dijk while Pulisic and Willian playing off of him should help create chances. Mount and Kovacic should add plenty of pressing ability in the middle with Reece and Alonso providing threat going forward as well. It will be a big game and the key for Chelsea will have to be to win the battle in the middle and stay solid defensively. We could go with 4 at the back as well with Jorginho and Kovacic in the middle and Mount slightly forward but I think Lampard will stick to the three and change if need be.
Liverpool Team Preview
Milner is back in contention but I don’t think he will start the game while Henderson and Matip are out. Liverpool’s team will be the usual with Salah, Mane, and Firmino up front causing the threat while the likes of Ox, Wijnaldum, and Fabinho patrol the midfield. Robertson and Trent will cause concern down the wings but hopefully we can handle them.
Starting XI Prediction
We have done really well against Liverpool throughout the season and I feel that we can leave Anfield with 3 points especially with there being no fans in the stadium. There is much more at stake for Chelsea and if we can replicate the intensity we had against United and take our chances than we can win this game! COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
