The last dance!
Chelsea take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final game of the 19/20 season. All 20 teams will be playing at the same time as there will be a top four race, Europa League race and a relegation battle going on simultaneously. Chelsea sit 4th on goal difference at the moment 1 point above Leicester and just behind Manchester United. Wolves sit 6th and a win for Nuno and team would guarantee them Europa League football while a draw or a loss would depend on the Tottenham’s result to see whether Wolves remain 6th. 7th could also get the team Europa League football if Chelsea win the FA Cup. Wolves have won 5 games post lockdown while they have drawn 1 and lost 2. Nuno has had another great season and Wolves should be proud regardless of the result.
Chelsea go into this game with the same parameters as the one we had against Liverpool. A win would get us Champions League football regardless of results elsewhere while a draw would also get us Champions League football regardless of results elsewhere. A loss would get us Champions League football if Manchester United won but not if that game was a draw or win for Leicester. So Chelsea’s mission is clear get the 3 points and get Champions League football. Our last two games have shown that we have a fight in us, beating United was a good win while our loss to Liverpool wasn’t really a thrashing but a good game. We almost got the point against Liverpool and if we can channel that energy from the last two games we can get the job done against Wolves. We won the reverse fixture 2-5 with Tomori scoring the first goal, Tammy getting a hattrick and Mount scoring in extra time. We need to channel that early season energy into this game and get the points.
Chelsea Team Preview
Lampard has stated that Kante has returned to training but whether he plays is unknown. The big dilemma for the Lampard is if he should drop Kepa and start Caballero. I would say start Caballero, neither inspires total confidence but we looked better at the back with Caballero in goal and the defenders need that in this game. We could stick to a back three for this game with Azpilicueta, Zouma and Rudiger starting. Reece James and Alonso should start as the wing backs while Kante and Kovacic should make up the midfield if Kante is fit enough. Up front Pulisic should return to the starting XI with Giroud up top and I would start Hudson-Odoi at right wing. CHO should more of a threat when he came on against Liverpool and Willian looks like he is exhausted. We could of course start with a 4 at the back as well in which case I would drop Alonso and bring in Mount. I think the back four is the better option for this game but that is my opinion.
Wolverhampton Team Preview
Wolves have no injury concerns heading into this game as Nuno has a full squad to select from. Wolves should go with 3 at the back as usual with Traore, Jimenez, Doherty, Neves, Dendoncker, Podence, all posing big threats going forward. Moutinho, and Neto are other players that can come of the bench and make an impact.
Starting XI Prediction
Chelsea know what they need and that is Champions League football, it would be a great achievement given the circumstances of this season. Wolves won’t be easy and they have goals of their own but if we play like we have at the best of times this season then the 3 points should go our way. Its the final push, COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
