Top four sealed, Champions League acquired!
The stage was set as Chelsea needed a point against Wolves to seal a top four spot and Champions League football. The opponent was Wolves who themselves needed 3 points to seal a Europa League spot. Lampard went with 3 at the back once again as but made a few changes. Caballero came in for Kepa, Azpilicueta, Zouma, and Rudiger continued as the back 3. James and Alonso continued as the wing backs while Kovacic and Jorginho kept their place in the middle. Pulisic returned for Willian who injured himself and missed the game while Mount switched to the right wing. Giroud kept his place up front.
Right from the get go Chelsea dominated possession and play although Wolves stayed strong defensively and handled the likes of Pulisic and Mount well as we could not connect passes up front. Plenty of possession but nothing to show for it as Chelsea kept Wolves in their own half. The first goal came in the 46th minute as Alonso was fouled outside the box. Mount stepped up to take the free kick and curled a beautiful shot past Patricio to make it 1-0. The 2nd goal came soon after as Wolves looked flustered. Pulisic broke through and passed the ball into Mount’s path who played a perfect pass for Giroud. Giroud managed to get the ball into the net as we went into half time with a 2-0 lead more or less both feet in the top four. The 2nd half was all Chelsea as Wolves and Nuno made changes but Chelsea just professionally saw out the win. Controlled possession and Wolves never looked like a threat. Chelsea could have actually scored a few more but we missed that clinical edge to put the ball into the net.
Caballero – Nothing much to do and made some fairly easy saves. A clean sheet to his name though and the Argentine will probably start against Arsenal in the final as well.
Azpilicueta – Consistent once again as he looked very solid and kept most attacks at bay.
Zouma – Continues to show that he is our best centre back as he handled Jimenez with perfection.
Rudiger – Good but when Traore came on he more than once looked extremely weak on that left hand side.
James – Another good performance from Reece as he looks to cement his place in the side.
Alonso – Great going forward and good for the 1st half but when Traore the Spaniard kept ghosting past his compatriot.
Kovacic – Solid performance once again as Kovacic has been by far the most consistent this season. Drove the ball well and made some great last ditch tackles.
Jorginho – Kept things moving and if it was the last performance we saw of Jorginho at the Bridge it was a good one.
Mount – Man of the match as he sealed the game with a goal and an assist. Mason has had a breakthrough season and his versatility has been key for Lampard. Only way is up.
Pulisic – Quiet afternoon but he did do well for the 2nd goal although generally found it hard to dribble past Wolves physical back line.
Giroud – Another goal to Giroud’s name and he has been crucial for Chelsea post lockdown and really since January. A true professional and a must keep for next season.
Abraham – A decent cameo, probably should have got a goal but ends the season with 15 goals and that is great as he will look to build upon it next season.
Hudson-Odoi – Good but really needs to start a game to make an impact.
Lofus-Cheek – Not much time to make an impact.
Pedro – Just a farewell cameo for a true legend of the game and an extremely professional player for Chelsea.
Lampard – Got the job done and can now look to the FA Cup final.
A good solid game by the team as Timo Werner looked on from the stands. Chelsea are far from done though as we head into the FA Cup final next weekend with a chance at a trophy in Lampard’s first season. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
