Impossible is nothing…
Chelsea go into the final remaining competition of the 19/20 season as we take on Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena for the 2nd leg of our Round of 16 tie against the Germans. We played the 1st leg nearly 5 months ago which we lost 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on a night where we played off the park by Hansi Flick’s team. Gnabry and Davies caused all sorts of problems for our right hand side while Lewandowski was a constant threat. Turning around 3 away goals would mean that we would need to score 3 in Munich as a minimum requirement to take the game to extra time. If Chelsea managed to score 4 away goals that’s when matters would get interesting because Munich would have to score 2 for every one goal conceded after that. Knowing our defensive record though and how we can’t handle pace, things would really have to go our way for us to score 4 and concede a maximum of 1 goal.
Now you might be thinking Anubhav this is impossible, this is a glorified friendly for next season and at best a chance for the likes of Hudson-Odoi, Tammy maybe RLC and some other academy players to play in a massive game. That is all true on paper it is an impossible game. There have been some great comebacks in the Champions League over the years though, Roma in 2018, Barcelona in 2017, Chelsea against Napoli in 2012. The precedence for a miracle is there but the players will have to believe and put in a performance at the very top level. Bayern’s season ended around a month ago as they sealed the Bundesliga title post lockdown. Bayern won all 11 of their games scoring 33 goals in the process and conceding 9. They also managed to win DFB Pokal. The odds are heavily stacked against Lampard and team.
Bayern Munich Team Preview
Bayern Munich are without Pavard and that is basically it. Flick has is whole squad at disposal as the likes of Muller and Neuer look to take revenge on Chelsea for the 2012 final. Expect Neuer to start in goal with Kimmich slotting in at left back. Boateng and Alaba should be the starting centre backs with Davies at right back. Goretzka and Alcantara should make up the midfield with the attack consisting of Gnabry, Muller, Coman and Lewandowski up front. As they say Bayern will very much go in for the kill.
Chelsea Team Preview
Where to start with Chelsea, we are missing Azpilicueta, Pulisic, Pedro, and Willian. Alonso has also been left in London. I think Lampard will revert to a 4-3-3 for the game. Caballero should start in goal, with Reece James and Zouma keeping their place in the team. I would personally start Tomori alongside Zouma and with Azpi out our only realistic left back option is Emerson unless Lampard risks it and starts Maatsen. I think it would be fun to see Maatsen but I have a feeling Emerson will start. Kante is fit and so should start as the CDM while Ruben and Kovacic start further forward. Hudson-Odoi will most likely start with Mount starting as the other winger. Giroud should keep his place up front.
Starting XI Prediction
This gives me strong 2012 Champions League final vibes. Even then we had Bertrand starting as a winger and Bosingwa in as well with David Luiz and Cahill as our centre backs. The odds were against us then and they are against us this time as well. While I would love for us to go through with a 1-4 scoreline it would be the stuff of dreams, the main thing is to put in a performance that fans would be proud of. Show that you want to win put in the 90 minutes plus of your careers and then the fans will be proud no matter what the result. COME ON YOU BLUES!!!
